The invention relates to a mid-frequency high power transformer which is specially used as a welding transformer in resistance welding, comprising a primary winding penetrated by the limb of a transformer core and a secondary winding which are configured as concentrically overlapping cylindrical windings. The windings of the primary windings are formed by a plurality of spirally wound layers of a relatively thin electrically conductive metal strip material, and the windings of the secondary winding are formed by an appropriate number of spirally wound layers of a thicker electrically conductive metal strip material chosen according to the desired reduction ratio between the primary and the secondary windings. The width of the winding layers of the metal strip materials measured perpendicularly in relation to the longitudinal direction is substantially identical to or only slightly smaller than the length of the limb of the transformer core penetrating the windings, and the connection lines on the secondary winding are connected to the front face edges of the windings of the strip material of the secondary coil.

A compensating device suitable for use in railway car transformers has at least one compensation receptacle in fluid communication connection with the interior of the housing of a transformer and having a fluid volume. A separating element limits the fluid volume in the compensation receptacle. When a change occurs in the fluid volume in the compensation receptacle, the separating element is subject to a change in position. The separating element is designed in the form of a roll-over membrane. The circumferential edge of the membrane is connected to the side walls of the compensation receptacle at a distance form the bottom of the receptacle in a sealing manner. The connection is such that the roll-over membrane, in its rolled-up state, has a position in which it allows for the largest amount of fluid volume by substantially extending in one plane at a distance form the bottom. The membrane can be rolled-out from this position so as to approach the side walls and bottom in the compensation receptacle, reducing the fluid volume.

A method of enhancing the heat dissipating properties of a rigid substrate plate through creation of an array of erect spaced-apart parallelly disposed metallic fins projecting from the heat dissipating surface of the plate. The fins are created by superimposing a sheet of metallic foil upon a metallic plate, with the foil being bonded to the plate by welding utilizing ultrasonic energy. The welds are formed as spaced-apart parallel bands, with the foil being slit adjacent one edge of the band, with the foil thereafter being folded outwardly to form the heat dissipating metallic foil fins. The folding operation is undertaken following the steps of populating the substrate, thereby eliminating the requirement for unusual steps or precautions to protect what otherwise would be outwardly extending metallic fins.
