    摘要: The escape of chlorine from a source thereof, such as the chlorine hydrate store of a metal-chlorine battery, is prevented or further escape and circulation of chlorine is slowed by blanketing escaped chlorine and the source thereof with a foam, such as one which is generated from an aqueous system which includes a foaming agent, e.g., an anionic surface active compound, and a gas. In preferred embodiments of the invention, neutralizing agents are present in the foam to convert the chlorine to a less toxic state or condition. Also described are pressurized compositions for generating the foam, articles for containing and dispensing the compositions and apparatuses for applying the compositions to sources of escaping chlorine, some of which apparatuses operate automatically when chlorine accidentally escapes from the battery. Also described is an apparatus for confining the escaped chlorine near the source thereof, in case of a motor vehicle accident, and contacting such chlorine with a neutralizing medium.

    摘要: A cell stack for use in a battery or fuel cell using a liquid electrolyte. A plurality of individual frames made from electrically insulating material, each having a cavity extending transversely therethrough and separate elongated supply and return electrolyte passageways leading to and from the cavity. An electrode assembly is disposed in a recess provided in one surface of one of the frames and sandwiched between it and another frame. Each frame is bonded to the next adjacent frame to provide a complete seal surrounding the periphery of the cavity, each group of two adjacent electrode assemblies and three frames providing an electrochemical cell. The frames may be injectionmolded from polysulfone and solvent-bonded by a chlorinated hydrocarbon.

The generator or battery comprises a repetitive unit of groups of thin, plate-like, components, each group having a total thickness that is preferably smaller than about 1 millimeter and comprising an impervious bipolar electrode, a microporous membrane, and means for maintaining an essentially constant spacing between said bipolar electrode and the membrane. These generators are capable of providing long service lives and/or a large specific power or output.
