Abstract: In a general aspect, a photonic crystal maser includes a dielectric body having an array of cavities ordered periodically to define a photonic crystal structure in the dielectric body. The dielectric body also includes a region in the array of cavities defining a defect in the photonic crystal structure. An elongated slot through the region extends from a slot opening in a surface of the dielectric body at least partially through the dielectric body. The elongated slot and the array of cavities define a waveguide of the dielectric body. The dielectric body additionally includes an input coupler aligned with an end of the elongated slot and configured to couple a reference radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation to the waveguide. The photonic crystal maser also includes a vapor or source of the vapor in the elongated slot and an optical window covering the elongated slot.

Abstract: In a general aspect, a vapor cell is presented that includes a dielectric body. The dielectric body has a surface that defines an opening to a cavity in the dielectric body. The vapor cell also includes a vapor or a source of the vapor in the cavity of the dielectric body. An optical window covers the opening of the cavity and has a surface bonded to the surface of the dielectric body to form a seal around the opening. The seal includes metal-oxygen bonds formed by reacting a first plurality of hydroxyl ligands on the surface of the dielectric body with a second plurality of hydroxyl ligands on the surface of the optical window.

Abstract: A phased-array MASER detector for synthetic aperture interferometric three-dimensional imaging. The detector elements, for example 102-106 zero bias Schottky detector diodes with sufficient sensitivity to reliably detect various values of MASER radiation, are arranged in layers offset in three dimensions. The phased-array MASER detector is particularly useful for detecting characteristics in a biological object using low energy (2-10 Watts), coherent MASER radiation. MASER intensity data of an interferometric pattern is collected by the detector array, is deconvolved, and is used to generate three-dimensional energy activity maps for a given time slice or on a time-shifting basis.

Abstract: The present invention provides an atomic oscillator comprising: a first frequency synthesizer for multiplying a reference frequency signal oscillated with a first voltage control oscillator by a first multiplication ratio and synthesizing a first high frequency signal; a first semiconductor laser for emitting a first laser light modulated by the first high frequency signal; a second frequency synthesizer for multiplying an output signal oscillated by a second voltage control oscillator with a second multiplication ratio and synthesizing a second high frequency signal; a second semiconductor laser for emitting a second laser modulated by the second high frequency signal; a gas cell being emitted with the first laser light and the second laser light simultaneously, the gas cell enclosing a first alkali-metal atom gas, a second alkali-metal atom gas, and buffer gas; and a computer for setting the first multiplication ratio in the first frequency synthesizer.

The heating device is pressed against the container toward the atom cell, and the container is in turn pressed against the positioning member.

Abstract: An array of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) spin torque oscillators (STOs) is described. Each STO is comprised of a uniform, chemically synthesized, spherical nanoparticle which couples to current flowing along a surface. The particles are organized into an array by a self-assembly technique with uniform spacing and close proximity to allow strong electrical and magnetic coupling between particles. The coupling of the nanoparticles to the surface current drives the oscillations by spin-torque, and for phase locking and data input. The uniform, spherical shape of the particles allows the oscillations to be achieved at low currents and with low power dissipation. The MNP-STOs may be used as a basis for massively parallel computing, microwave oscillators, or other applications.

Abstract: A terahertz laser suitable for emitting at least one first electromagnetic radiation, a first emission frequency of which is between 700 and 1200 GHz. The laser comprises an infrared laser source and a resonant cavity arranged to be optically pumped by the infrared laser source, the resonant cavity containing ammonia gas as an amplifier medium and having at least one configuration in which the resonant cavity is a resonant cavity at the first emission frequency. The infrared laser source is a continuous semiconductor laser source capable of exciting molecules of the amplifier medium from an initial energy level to at least one first excited energy level, the molecules of the amplifier medium placed in the first energy level being able to relax through a pure inversion transition for which the relaxation energy corresponds to the first emission frequency.

Abstract: An atomic oscillator includes a gas cell that has metal atoms sealed therein, a heating unit that heats the gas cell, a heat transmission unit that is positioned between the gas cell and the heating unit, is thermally connected to the gas cell, and transmits heat generated by the heating unit to the gas cell, and a light absorbing unit that is thermally connected to the gas cell so as to be separated from the heat transmission unit and absorbs heat of the gas cell. The heat transmission unit includes a gas cell accommodation portion including at least a pair of gas cell accommodation walls disposed outside the gas cell, and a thermal conductive elastic member which is interposed in a gap formed by the gas cell and the gas cell accommodation walls of the heat transmission unit.
