A power supply system having a plurality of individual power supplies utilizes a master control to periodically compensate for errors in individual power supplies. The master control is periodically coupled to individual power supplies by multiplexing means to provide compensation signals to counter drifts and errors due to varying circuit parameters therein.

Disclosed herein is an improved pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage regulator-converter system which can function, alone, as a switched voltage regulator system or in combination with a switched power converter, synchronized therewith to form an improved voltage regulator-converter/power converter system. In the pulse width modulated voltage regulator-converter embodiment of the invention, secondary windings of a "current mode" regulator-converter interstage transformer are coupled to regulator-converter power transistors in a push-push circuit configuration. Signals generated by a system clock means and an error signal, derived from the output of an averaging filter, drive a pulse width modulated control means connected to the primary windings of the regulator-converter interstage transformer to thereby increase the maximum regulated output voltage of the voltage regulator-converter system after conditioning in the averaging filter. In the pulse width modulated voltage regulator-converter/power converter embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned output voltage of the voltage regulator-converter system is coupled directly to a switched power converter connected in a push-pull circuit configuration. In turn, additional signals generated by the system clock means switch the power converter in synchronizm with the voltage regulator-converter system.

A current sensing regulator operates in a switching mode of regulation between two sensed current levels in a free-running operation, or between one of the current levels and an intermediate level in a fixed-frequency synchronization operation. The sensed current levels at which switching occurs are set through a command signal, and a comparator controls switching at the set current levels or at the occurrence of synchronization pulses.

Logic controlled regulated power supply which produces a d.c. output potential which is stabilized at a predetermined value through the variation of the average efficaciousness of a train of rectified clock pulses. The level where the predetermined value is satisfied is sensed to produce a logic level which inhibits further clock pulse efficacy at least until such time as the d.c. output potential, as accumulated across a charge holding capacitor, dissipates to a level less than the predetermined value through the impedance of an external load whereupon the flow of clock pulses are resumed for at least the period of time necessary to integratively reaccumulate sufficient rectified charge in the charge holding capacitor to again exceed the predetermined value. This cycle of enablement and disablement of clock pulse flow continues ad infinitum thereby maintaining a relatively constant d.c. level across the terminals of the charge holding capacitor.

A switching voltage regulator for regulating line voltage which produces an output proximating that of a linear voltage regulator. The switching voltage regulator includes a linear amplifier which receives a reference signal as well as an output feedback signal and produces an overall feedback signal for utilization. A discrete processor receives the overall feedback signal as well as a feedback from its own switching output signal in order to produce its output switching signal as a pulse strength modulation signal. The pulse strength modulation signal is then used to switch on and off the line voltage in order to produce an intermediate output signal which is then filtered in order to produce the voltage regulated output signal. A feedback processor can be included between the voltage regulated output signal and the linear amplifier and can provide either regular voltage feedback or can also include damping factor feedback.

A high voltage, pulse width regulator circuit wherein the input voltage may be up to twice the voltage rating of pass or switching transistors used in the circuit is disclosed. This is accomplished by dividing the input unregulated DC voltage or full wave rectified AC voltage in half. The divided voltage is placed on each of two input lines. The pulse width regulator utilizes two transistors or other semiconductor switches, each receiving one half the input voltage. To insure a properly regulated voltage on the output and to avoid the possibility of one of the transistors receiving more than one half the input voltage, means are provided for insuring that the voltage drop across either transistor will be limited to approximately one half the input voltage at all times. By utilizing the teachings of this invention, a pulse width regulator capable of handling an input voltage of at least twice the rating of the transistors employed in the regulator is obtained.

In a DC--DC converter of the type in which an inductance stores energy when a main switching transistor is turned on and releases the stored energy when the main switching transistor is turned off, a semiconductor active element is used as a flywheel element which is turned off when the main switching element is turned on, but is turned on to provide the path for the current established by the release of the stored energy, an auxiliary diode is connected in parallel with the semiconductor active element and in the same forward direction, and the signal which is substantially in synchronism with the switching operation of the main switching transistor is applied to the control terminal of the semiconductor active element so as to cause it to turn on and off.

A combined voltage reducer and regulator is provided for delivering a relatively low voltage, derived from a higher voltage source, to a load so as to maintain a relatively constant voltage at the load. The voltage reducer comprises a plurality of capacitors, diodes and selectively operated switches which, dependent upon the order of application of timing signals, operates in either one of two different modes to achieve different degrees of voltage reduction. The inherent nature of the capacitors provide a limited degree of voltage regulation. Supplementing this, in each mode of operation, a voltage regulator or regulating circuit is provided to provide a fine degree of voltage regulation between limits. When one limit is reached, the mode of operation of the voltage reducer is switched to allow the fine degree of regulation to take place in the other mode, the switching between modes providing a coarser degree of voltage regulation.

A secondary switch controller has an input circuit with an inductance and a semiconductor switch and an output circuit with a rectifier and a smoothing element. A circuit for controlling operation of the secondary switch includes an internal control loop responsive to the voltage at the inductance, an external control loop responsive to the output voltage, and a current limiting circuit responsive to the current flowing through the input circuit.

A synchronized electric modulator for the control in synchronized conductance control mode of a regulation unit, thereby to assure a close control of the current peak value. A current reference is generated which varies as a function of a command signal representing the deviation of a parameter value in a system from its reference value. The current through the load is monitored and sensed to be compared to the current reference so as to produce a control signal for the regulation unit, which is dependent on the variation of the sensed current under the synchronization of external clock pulses.
