A digital GMSK filter for use for frequency modulation of a carrier signal in a GMSK transmission system is described. The GMSK filter uses a large number of individual current sources, whose current values are individually weighted. The current sources are driven via a control logic module using a shift register with a thermometer code, such that this results in a total current with a Gaussian characteristic, which is converted across a resistor to a voltage and drives a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The filter provides exact implementation of the sample values, virtually without any quantization error, and requires only a small chip area for its implementation.

A high-speed power-efficient coded M-ary Frequency-Shift Keying (M-ary FSK) modulator. The modulator includes a coding logic, which generates (M/2) Gray code signals in accordance with an (N−1) bits control signal; and (M/2) switching oscillators. Each switching oscillator includes: a composite crystal resonator with a first end and a second end; a first switch, which is controlled by Gray code signals, with one end connected to the first end of the composite crystal resonator, and the other end grounded via an equivalent negative resistance circuit; a second switch, which is controlled by serial data, with one end connected to the second end of the composite crystal resonator, and the other end grounded; and a capacitor, with one end connected to the second end of the composite crystal resonator, and the other end grounded. One of the (M/2) switching oscillators is activated by the control signal, and the frequency of the activated oscillator is switched by the serial data for achieving M-ary frequency shift.

A method and a system for tuning a resonance module in e.g. a radio base station are disclosed. The resonance module has tuning means, a transmitter connection, and an antenna connection. First frequency input and output signals on the transmitter and antenna connection, respectively, are sensed and processed to tune the resonance module to a frequency of the input signal on the transmitter connection. The processing of the sensed input and output signals includes processing in a second frequency range. Prior art methods are improved by the invention through e.g. the use of a quadrature modulator to increase adjustment speed and overall applicability of the resonance module to be tuned.

A variable phase shifter shifts adjusts a phase of a signal determined by quadrature modulating the baseband signal. A high-power amplifier non-linearly high-power amplifies the quadrature-modulated signal. An attenuator attenuates the amplified signal by a gain equal to that of the high-power amplifier. A subtracter extracts non-linear distortion generated during the non-linear high-power amplification by subtracting the phase-shifted quadrature-modulated signal from an output of the attenuator. A control circuit automatically adjusts a phase shiftof the variable phase shifter and an attenuation of the attenuator according to a transmission frequency.

System for highly linear phase modulation. Apparatus is provided for linear phase modulation utilizing a phase-locked loop (PLL). The apparatus includes a PLL utilizing fractional N synthesis to realize a non-integer divide value. A two-port voltage-controlled oscillator includes a first port controlled by the phase-locked loop and a second port accessed for direct modulation. A second input to the fractional-N phase-locked loop is provided to remove the modulation introduced at the second port. Lastly, a calibration loop is provided wherein a frequency offset applied at the second port is adjusted until it cancels the effects of a known frequency offset introduced to the fractional-N phase-locked loop.
