Method and apparatus for transfer of signals from multiple antennas down to baseband over a common radio frequency (RF) chain. Antenna selection having greater flexibility and applicability to both uplink and downlink wherein priority is given to the antenna receiving a better quality signal. Measurements are taken during each time slot to determine the weighting to be given to the antenna with the better quality signal. Techniques and apparatus are provided to take measurements over a range of intervals from time slots to single symbols, for example, to select the best signal the techniques described herein may be used individual, and in some cases are combined to receive additional benefits in efficiency.

A single base station supports the non-diversity transmission of a first digital signal type and the diversity transmission of a second digital signal type. The base station includes primary channel boards for modulating and encoding a first digital signal type and secondary channel boards for modulating and encoding a second digital signal type. A first group of transmit radio modules accept the first digital signal type and the second digital signal type and provides a composite electromagnetic output signal. Each transmit radio module is associated with a different sector. A second group of transmit radio modules accept the second digital signal type from secondary channel boards and provide a diverse electromagnetic output signal for complementing the composite electromagnetic output signal.

The moving contact of the first switch is connected to a first antenna, the first fixed contact of the first switch is connected to a transmitter circuit, the second fixed contact of the first switch is connected to the first fixed contact of the second switch, the moving contact of the second switch is connected to a receiver circuit, and the second fixed contact of the second switch is connected to a second antenna. By switching as appropriate between antennae the attenuation of transmission and reception signals caused by the switches can be reduced.

A transmission side device combines two independent transmission signals (S1, S2) together to produce two combined signals, i.e., a sum signal (S1+S2) and a difference signal (S1−S2), and transmits the produced signals over two radio wave propagation paths, respectively. After the sum signal and the difference signal are received by the reception side device, the sum signal and the difference signal, as received, are subjected to an AGC control operation and a complex-level multiplication operation with a weighting coefficient based on correlation control, and then separated into two, restored, independent signals.

A 2N-QAM macrocell for generating constellations with 2N symbols, where N is the number of bits in the digital data word [D0:DN−1] applied to the macrocell. Since the digital data word is applied directly to the macrocell, the need for a digital mapping chip is thus eliminated thus reducing the complexity and power consumption of the circuit. An important aspect of the invention is that the 2N-QAM macrocell is amenable to being fabricated as a single microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) or integrated circuit (IC). As such, a QAM circuit can be formed from two MMICs; the 2N-QAM macrocell and a quadrature hybrid phase shifting device formed on separate MMIC to form a 2N-QAM circuit or one MMIC containing both the 0/90 degree phase shifter and the 2N-QAM circuit. The phase shifting device is used to provide the in-phase and quadrature phase components of the local oscillator signal. Since the QAM circuit in accordance with the present invention only requires one or two MMIC chips; the complexity and cost of the circuit is reduced and the need for tuning is obviated. The 2N-QAM macrocell may be formed from Gilbert transconductance multipliers with GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology, thus providing maximum symbol rates in excess of 1 Gsps.
