    摘要: A wide range tunable filter is provided. A randomly polarized incoming beam is converted into two orthogonally polarized beams. A null wave plate and filter block turns these two beams into four beams. Two of the four beams have a single range of wavelengths and two beams have the remaining wavelengths. Each pair of beams is orthogonally polarized. A null wave plate and birefringent crystal positioned after the filter block combine the two beams having the single range of wavelengths and combines the two beams having the remaining wavelengths. The invention includes a thermal compensator to correct the angle of the filter with respect to the incident light.

An optical signal having a predetermined initial polarization state is launched into the optical communications system.     摘要: The invention relates to optical communications using techniques for providing efficient high speed polarization bit interleaving. One common architecture for high-speed time-division-multiplexing employs two modulators having a same bit rate, wherein two separately modulated streams of data bits are combined into a high-speed single serial stream of data bits, instead of providing a single higher-cost higher-speed modulator. The present invention has found with the availability of fast data modulators, that polarization bit interleaving can be employed more efficiently for higher speed data transmission in optical network systems by providing an optical modulator including a single data modulator, rather than multiplexing different data streams from different modulators. The present invention provides an optical modulator for encoding data on orthogonally polarized alternate light pulses comprising: means for modifying a laser light beam to a pulse train at a first frequency; a data modulator for encoding signal data on the pulse train at a second data stream frequency where the second frequency is greater than or equal to the first frequency; means for rotating a polarization state of at least alternate light pulses of the pulse train to provide a data stream of orthogonally polarized alternate light pulses.

    摘要: An optical polarization encoding been invented which allows wavelength dependent processing of polycromatic opticals without prior separation into narrow wavelength bands. The invention comprises a stack of variable and fixed birefringent elements which introduces, on passage though the stack, wavelength dependent polarization onto a polycromatic optical signal of arbitrary polarization. Desired polarizations are achieved simultaneously at all wavelengths contained within the incoming signal by independently varying the birefringence and/or crystallographic orientation of each element within the stack. The encoded signal may be subsequently be processed, e.g. rerouted or attenuated, as a function of wavelength using polarization dependent devices. The encoding stack is rendered polarization insensitive by dividing the incoming optical signal, with a polarization beam splitter, into two beams of orthogonal polarization prior to passage through the stack.
