The printhead controller includes a first decoder for expanding compressed data relating to the bi-level black layer and a second decoder for expanding compressed data relating to the contone color layer. The first and second decoders are arranged in parallel. First and second temporary storage devices are provided for storing the expanded data from the first and second decoders, respectively. A data manipulating unit manipulates the data output from these temporary storage devices to be fed to the printhead. A printhead interface is provided at an output from the data manipulator for controlling at least one printhead connectable to the interface and for feeding the manipulated data to the printhead.

Thus, ratios A=N/n and B=M/m are obtained. The inverse number 1/A of the value A is cumulated by circuits. An address generating circuit generates addresses at four points for calculating a density value a of a converted pixel corresponding to the integer part of a cumulated value &Sgr;(1/A). These addresses are supplied to memories. The pixel data at the four points that are read from the memories are supplied to respective multiplying devices. The decimal part of the value &Sgr;(1/A) is supplied as an interpolating coefficient p to a multiplying device. A coefficient (1−q) is supplied to a multiplying device. Likewise, in the vertical direction, coefficients q and (1−q) are supplied to respective multiplying devices. These multiplying devices and adding devices perform operations. A speed change unit changes the moving speed of the carriage in accordance with the copy magnification, and when the set copy magnification is equal to or smaller than a certain magnification in reduction, changes the carriage moving speed to 1/n (n: a natural number larger than 1) from the relationship between the current magnification and the carriage moving speed. A preprocessing unit converts the electrical signal into a digital signal, has a line memory for storing 1-line input image data in the main scanning direction, performs arithmetic processing for multilevel n-line data in the main scanning direction to change the subscanning magnification in reduction, and outputs 1-line output image data in the main scanning direction. An image data processing unit performs predetermined image data processing including processing of receiving for each pixel the 1-line output image data in the main scanning direction output from the preprocessing unit, and converting the image data into binary data.
