A method and apparatus for switching input terminals based on device capability are disclosed. The method supplies a digital signal and an analog signal to a device. The method includes examination of whether or not a device is receiving a digital signal in an eligible format. The method also selects an analog input terminal to receive an analog signal unless the digital signal is being provided in the eligible format. The apparatus includes a digital input terminal to receive a digital signal, an analog input terminal to receive an analog signal, an IEEE1394 interface coupled with the digital input terminal, a HD decoder coupled with the IEEE1394 interface, a memory and a selector which selects the digital input terminal if the digital signal is in an eligible format for the device. The apparatus otherwise selects the analog input terminal. The selector may include a controller for examining whether or not the decoder is capable of decoding the digital signal, and a switch controlled by the controller so as to select the digital input terminal if the decoder is capable of decoding the digital signal, otherwise to select the analog input terminal.

A digital/analog broadcast signal processing unit is provided by which a video/audio signal can be processed by receiving an analog broadcast signal and a digital broadcast signal and switching a signal processing block which is used in common for digital broadcast signal processing and analog broadcast signal processing. The digital/analog broadcast signal processing unit includes a digital broadcast signal processor for demodulating the digital broadcast signal tuned by the tuner, demultiplexing the demodulated digital broadcast signal into video and audio signals, and decoding the audio and video signals; an analog broadcast signal demodulator for demultiplexing the analog broadcast signal tuned by the tuner into analog video and audio signals and demodulating the video and audio signals; an audio switching unit for receiving the audio signals output from at least one of the digital broadcast signal processor and analog broadcast signal demodulator and selecting one input signal; a video switching unit for receiving the video signals output from at least one of the digital broadcast signal processor and analog broadcast signal demodulator and selecting one input signal; an audio signal processing block for receiving the output signal of the audio switching unit, for compensating characteristics of the audio signal, and for outputting the compensated audio signal via a speaker; and a video signal processing block for receiving the output signal of the video switching unit, for compensating characteristics of the video signal, and for outputting the compensated video signal. The digital/analog broadcast signal processing unit further includes a controller for determining whether the digital broadcast signal is received, and generating one of the first switching control signal and the second switching control signal for selecting one signal of the audio and video switching units according to one of a presence or absence of the digital broadcast signal, and a selection of a user via a key input unit connected to the controller.

A changeover switch 13 connected to an image quality adjusting circuit in a video chroma processing circuit 7 is opened or closed according to an on-off signal S1, showing the superposed period of both signals detected by a decoder 4. If the above on-off signal S1 is on, the changeover switch 13 is opened and the adjustment of image quality is disabled. Therefore, SI display never disappears due to the adjustment of image quality, and the quality of an image can be also adjusted according to an ambient status. Other approaches are also disclosed from preventing image quality adjustment of at least portions of a displayed image containing an information image.

A high definition television (HDTV) for displaying an image contained in a broadcasting signal of mutually different broadcasting systems is provided. The HDTV restores a first image signal which is an image signal contained in an HD digital broadcasting signal and a second image signal which is an image signal contained in an NTSC analog broadcasting signal which are input from an antenna and an external input port, and format-converts each restored image signal into an image signal having a predetermined frame format. An image signal synthesizer including two memories and a timing signal generator time-base-compresses the format-converted first and second image signals so as to correspond to a main picture and a sub-picture of a PIP image to be displayed, and synthesizes the first and second image signals into a single PIP image signal. A CRT displays a PIP image contained in the PIP image signal on a screen.

A receiver includes two input terminals. A VHF broadcast signal over a 6-MHz band channel is inputted through one input terminal, while an FM broadcast signal over an approximate 100-kHz band channel is inputted through the other input terminal. The other input terminal is connected with a trap circuit for band width reduction. This trap circuit causes attenuation in signal components over channels close to a desired channel except that over the desired channel with a band of approximately 100 kHz. An analog switch inputs selectively the VHF broadcast signal and the FM broadcast signal attenuated in the signal components to a tuning circuit having a tuning band width of approximately 6 MHz. When an FM broadcast signal is selected, an FM broadcast signal only over a desired channel is outputted from the tuning circuit.

An image-processing apparatus displays different UI pictures suitable for the resolutions in accordance with aspect ratios 16:9 and 4:3, respectively. UI picture data to form a UI picture is divided into wide-mode parts only used when the wide mode is set, normal-mode parts only used when the normal mode is set, and common parts shared between both modes. The divided parts are stored in a storage device. When the wide mode is set, the predetermined widemode parts and the common-parts are selected. When the normal mode is set, the predetermined normal-mode parts and the common parts are selected. The selected parts are mapped in predetermined positions of an effective display screen (image-processing region). Thus, the UI picture is formed. With this arrangement, the advantage of the increased resolution in accordance with an aspect ratio of 16:9 can be effectively utilized. Further, even though the resolution is changed to the wide mode, the displayed UI picture does not appear much different from that which would be displayed in the normal mode, thereby making the user comfortable with the resulting image.

A frequency diversity system for use in mobile reception of television and RF signals in the meter or decimeter wavelength, such as for use with a mobile television having a first receiver, an additional receiver and a control and analysis circuit. The additional receiver detects all incoming frequencies corresponding to a preset program and switches the main receiver to an incoming frequency of a higher quality. The receiver is able to identify the frequencies corresponding to the desired program through a transmitter identification code, which is added to each signal. This code is usually a VPS identification signal. The control and analysis circuit compares the incoming frequencies to the frequency of the signal transmitted by the television receiver to determine the highest quality signal. In order to accelerate the process, the system processes local position coordinates of the television so that the frequencies analyzed are only those expected within the coverage area of the television.
