Systems and methods are provided for an electric tool (e.g., a power tool) that includes an output driver for receiving an accessory, and an accessory-type detector. A motor of the electric tool is coupled to the output driver for driving the accessory. The power tool also includes an operation trigger for activating the motor and a motor controller. The motor controller includes an electronic processor that is coupled to the accessory-type detector, the motor, the operation trigger, and a memory. The memory stores instructions that when executed by the electronic processor cause the motor controller to detect a characteristic of the accessory from output of the accessory-type detector. The motor controller determines an operational characteristic for the accessory based on the detected characteristic, and controls operation of the motor to drive the accessory according to the operational characteristic when the operation trigger is activated.

Enhanced methods are disclosed for handling cylindrical tubulars, advantageously in association with cleaning, inspection and other operations on the tubular. The tubular is held stationary while it is rotated. During rotation of the tubular, internal and external cleaning systems, and data acquisition systems, pass up and down the length of the rotating tubular. In preferred embodiments, a first tubular is loaded onto the handling machine, whereupon it is indexed and then rotated. Cleaning, inspection and other operations may be performed during rotation. Once operations are complete, the handling system ejects the first tubular while queuing up a second tubular to be loaded. The handling machine comprises a plurality of user-positional pods. Each pod includes scissor mechanisms, index machines and a roller machine to perform the handling methods. Sensors on drive rollers in the handling machine generate vibrational response data of the tubular while it rotates.

A thread cutting apparatus and method are disclosed for the formation of tapered threads on the end of an elongated reinforcing bar of the type used in concrete structures. The apparatus includes a cutting head assembly having tool holder arms that are cantilevered outwardly from a face or barrier surface to effect cutting of the threads outwardly of the barrier so as to protect the guideways and cutting displacement structure control structure from chips and debris. The apparatus includes positive lead control for the thread cutting chasers, a rigid clamping structure for the bar and a fluid control assembly. The fluid control assembly is capable of positioning the cutting head and housing for one or a multiple number of frusto-conical cuts of predetermined depth to permit the simultaneous formation of threads and removal of material from the reinforcing bar end.

Disclosed is a method directed particularly to improving a modified threaded buttress collar. The method is also of value with any internally threaded member having a seal ring groove therein. The method specifically deals with the removal of the feather edge thread created when a seal ring groove is placed within an internally threaded member. Such groove usually provides residence for a seal ring. When the groove is placed in the internally threaded member there is created a feather edge thread immediately adjacent the groove. This feather edge thread is easily deformable and can create severe galling problems within the coupling.The feather edge is removed, preferably, in stepped fashion utilizing a machining tool such as a grooving tool within a computer numerically controlled lathe. The grooving tool is set such that as the coupling turns in the lathe, the movement of the grooving tool matches the pitch and helix of the threads and the speed of the lathe. However, the grooving tool is offset such that it is placed on a collision course with the thread. The groove allows some running time for the grooving tool to be properly positioned for the specific thread pitch and helix. The feather edge is removed in several passes, each being deeper than the last until, ultimately, the feather edge is removed to a depth equal to the depth of the finished threads.
