If the automatic locking retractor (32) is active, then a predetermined weight is subtracted from the weight reading detected by the seat weight sensor (52) to produce a weight value prior to comparing the weight value to a predetermined threshold value. If the threshold value is larger, then the sensor module (50) signals the airbag module (48) to deactivate the airbag (46).

The interlocking portions (104 and 122) are unlocked during dismounting of the members to permit repositioning of the members relative to each other, which repositions the projection (122L). Changing the position of the projection (122L) changes the amount of rotation of the ring gear assembly (94) required prior to the projection (122L) pivoting the lever (50) to cause a lock-up of the retractor. This changes the predetermined length of the seat belt (16) that can be withdrawn.

It also includes a metal pawl which is movable into a locking position in engagement with a spool locking ratchet wheel to block the spool against rotation in the belt withdrawal direction. A pawl actuator is movable between a first position and a second position to move the pawl into its locking position. A manually movable member such as a push button can move the pawl actuator into its second position and thereby move the metal pawl into its locking position. When the pawl actuator has been moved into its second position by the manually movable member, an overcenter spring acts to keep the pawl actuator in its second position, holding the metal pawl in its locking position. The overcenter spring can act on the pawl only through the pawl actuator. Thus, the overcenter spring can hold the pawl in its locking position only when the pawl actuator is intentionally moved into its second position by the manually movable member.

For this purpose a feeler (26) is held in spring-resilient engagement with the outer periphery of the belt coil. An actuating arm (34) of a control pawl (24) pivotally mounted on the housing (10) cooperates with control faces of said feeler (26). The control pawl (24) is movable between a first stable position in which it engages with its pawl tip (30) into the control toothing (18) and a second stable position in which it is moved out of the region of the control toothing. With its control faces the feeler (26) following the outer diameter of the webbing coil (B) moves the control pawl (24) into its first stable position when the outer diameter of the webbing coil has reached a predetermined minimum value and into its second stable position when said outer diameter has reached a predetermined intermediate value.
