    摘要: A hopper car discharge outflow is controlled by closure members, at least one of which is movable. The doors are hingeless, being mounted on four bar linkages, such that the distal edge of the doors sweeps predominantly horizontally while the proximal edge of the door moves predominantly upwardly. The doors move through noncircular arcs, such that the size of the vertically projected door opening is abnormally large compared to the clearance heights of the door. The doors are driven by a longitudinal shaft that is mounted within the center sill. It drives a set of single input, double output bell cranks that drive adjacent pairs of doors, and that employs an over-center toggle to hold the doors in the closed position when the car is laded. The actuators may be mounted in shelters midway along the car, and may be offset from the centersill. The actuators may be mounted predominantly vertically such that gravity may obviate the need for a secondary lock. The doors of a transverse car need not all be of the same size. The over center may include a manual release having a fulcrum with a progressive decrease in mechanical advantage.

    摘要: A hopper car in which the body has vertical end walls and side walls each comprising a sloping lower portion and a vertical upper portion. The two sloping lower portions converge downwardly and their horizontal lower edges define a discharge opening. One of these edges lies in a horizontal plane which is at a different level to the plane containing the other lower edge. The angle of slope of one lower portion is different to the angle of slope of the other lower portion. Additionally, the horizontal plane containing the line of convergence between the one lower portion and its associated upper portion lies in a different horizontal plane to the corresponding line of convergence of the other side wall. An arcuate door carrying a laterally protruding operating arm closes-off the discharge opening.

    摘要: A railway hopper car is disclosed which includes a car body defined by opposite arcuate side sheets having a side sill extending longitudinally along the lower margin of each side sheet and at least a first end slope sheet partially defining an end hopper compartment. An end support structure for the end hopper compartment is secured to the car body and includes a shear plate extending transversely between the side sills, a stub center sill disposed subjacent the shear plate, a bolster beam extending laterally on either side of the stub center sill and interconnecting the stub center sill with the side sill, a vertical bolster web interconnecting the stub center sill and the shear plate, an additional vertical bolster web assembly interconnecting the stub center sill, the shear plate, and the bolster beam, and a plurality of vertical gusset plates interconnecting the slope sheet and shear plate. The gusset plates project perpendicular to the shear plate and are disposed in spaced, parallel relation to each other in an array which extends laterally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the car.

    摘要: A railway hopper car end structure and method of assembly is disclosed. The end structure includes a bolster assembly having a bottom plate extending transversely between the side sills and an upper arcuate wrap sheet secured at the opposite side sheets and at the inclined slope sheet. Diagonal gusset plates and vertical web plates extend between the wrap and bottom sheets to strengthen the bolster assembly. The bolster assembly carries a conventional center sill and center plate assembly. A plurality of generally semi-circular diaphragm plates extend transversely between the wrap sheet and the slope sheet at locations above the car axis and center plate to structurally stiffen the car body. The method of assembly consists of forming a sub-assembly including the bolster assembly, slope sheet and diaphragm plates and joining the sub-assembly to another sub-assembly including the side sills and intermediate bulkheads to permit alignment of the car during fabrication. The top and side sheets are then joined to one another and to the side sill and end structures to enclose the hopper car.

    摘要: A hopper car structure having a hopper body with a discharge opening at the bottom. A pivotally hung door having an arcuate base plate normally closes said opening and an arm is pivotally mounted on the door. A roller is carried by the arm on its free end and is intended to engage a ramp. The arm, in the closed condition of the door, has an abutment surface thereof spaced downwardly from an abutment surface of the door. When said roller engages an upwardly inclined ramp, the arm pivots upwardly with respect to the door until the abutment surface of the arm engages the abutment surface of the door. The door and arm then swing together about the pivotal mountings of the door to the open position of the door. The arm is locked against movement while the door is in its closed position and the abutment surface of the arm is spaced below the abutment surface of the door.
