Abstract: The present invention discloses an alkali-resistant microbial bacterium PDC-1 and its application. The present invention screens and isolates PDC-1 strain from the soil of a coal gangue stockpile in a coal mine in Shandong, China, which can utilize naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene or pyrene as the sole carbon source and has tolerance to heavy metals. The strain of the present invention is capable to degrade various PAHs with the presence of heavy metals. The strain is alkali resistant, simple to cultivate, and has a good application in the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metal contaminated sites.

Abstract: Docosahexaenoic acid-containing oil containing docosahexaenoic acid in a concentration of 40 wt. % or more of the total weight of fatty acids in the oil, and having an endothermic peak temperature determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of 15° C. or lower; a biomass including the same; and a method for producing docosahexaenoic acid-containing oil including obtaining a biomass by culturing microorganisms of the genus Aurantiochytrium capable of producing this docosahexaenoic acid-containing oil, recovering the biomass after culture, and extracting the oil from the biomass after recovery.

Abstract: A device for selectively capturing mycobacteria comprises a substrate and a capture polymer layer of poly-diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride, wherein the capture polymer layer is covalently linked onto the substrate via a UV-initiated polymerization reaction of a solution comprising diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride and a photoinitiator in water purged of dissolved oxygen, and wherein the UV exposure time is 30 seconds to 4 minutes at a power density of about 20 to about 25 mW/cm2. A kit can comprise the device. A microfluidic chip comprises at least a portion of at least one channel sidewall coated with a capture polymer layer of poly-diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride. A method for manufacturing the device includes plasma treating a substrate, providing a solution comprising diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride and a photoinitiator in water purged of dissolved oxygen, and coating the plasma-treated substrate via a UV-initiated polymerization reaction.

Abstract: Provided are delivery immunostimulatory bacteria that have enhanced colonization of tumors, the tumor microenvironment and/or tumor-resident immune cells, and enhanced anti-tumor activity. The immunostimulatory bacteria are modified by deletion of genes encoding the flagella, or by modification of the genes so that functional flagella are not produced, and/or are modified by deletion of pagP or modification of pagP to produce inactive PagP product. As a result, the immunostimulatory bacteria are flagellin− and/or pagP−. The immunostimulatory bacteria optionally have additional genomic modifications so that the bacteria are adenosine or purine auxotrophs. The bacteria optionally are one or more of asd−, purI−, and msbB−. The immunostimulatory bacteria, such as Salmonella species, are modified to encode immunostimulatory proteins that confer anti-tumor activity in the tumor microenvironment, and/or are modified so that the bacteria preferentially infect immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, or tumor-resident immune cells, and/or are modified to induce less cell death in immune cells than in other cells. Also provided are methods of inhibiting the growth or reducing the volume of a solid tumor by administering the immunostimulatory bacteria.
