The invention relates to ammunition for firearms, as smooth and a rifled barrel. The invention relates to a cartridge having a projectile, and a case which is mounted on the projectile from behind and which has a case mouth at the front end, wherein the projectile has a tip, and at the rear this tip merges into a circumferential front guide band which defines the outside diameter of the projectile, and directly adjoining this front guide band in the direction of the projectile base, a circumferential case mouth receiving space which extends in the axial direction of the projectile and in which the case mouth engages is situated in the projectile. In order to reduce the twistless freebore to a minimum and build up the gas pressure early during firing, it is proposed that an exposed portion of the case mouth receiving space extending in the axial direction of the projectile is situated between the front guide band and the case mouth; i.e., the case mouth does not completely fill the case mouth receiving space in the direction of the nose of the projectile.

The locking band can be received in a circumferential depression formed in the jacket and the core such as by compressing the core to cause the core and the jacket to expand radially fore and aft of the locking band. The circumferential depression can include shoulders that are in compressive engagement with the locking band to help secure the locking band in place. The circumferential depression can include an inwardly-extending annular band of jacket material which embeds itself into the core material with the result that the core is locked inside the jacket.

The groove encircles the casing engagement segment. A rear portion of the sealing band intersects a front portion of the groove. A front face of the sealing band is substantially flat. An angle of the front face of the sealing band is approximately the same as an angle of a neck-to-throat transition portion of the 5.56 NATO-specification chamber.

The annular cavity is defined by the scoop shaped front bourrelet, the aft bourrelet which has three radially extending support posts and bore riding shoes, and a combustible tubular case extension over the aft bourrelet extending forward to the front bourrelet. The assembly includes cartridge case having a multistrand ignition system having a plurality of flexible combustible ignition strand. The strands extend through the propellant charge in the case and extend between the posts of the aft bourrelet into the annular cavity to simultaneously ignite the propellant charge contained therein with the portion of the charge in the cartridge case.
