A method of fragmentation of elements of a nuclear reactor includes placement of elements inside a cask and subsequent cutting, the cask being perforated. Each element is lowered into the cask by a full internal height of the cask using a gripper having clamping jaws. The element is intercepted at an upper edge of the cask, lifted, and positioned using video surveillance and artificial lighting so that a hydraulic cutter is directly under the clamping jaws. The element is cut at a point corresponding to a level of the upper edge of the cask, separating from the element a fragment equal to the internal height of the cask. Then the upper part of the element remaining after cutting is lowered inside the cask by the full internal height of the cask and the cutting of the element into fragments is repeated until the element is fully cut to fragments.

One variation of a method for deploying a nuclear reactor system includes: constructing a tunnel at a particular location; and installing the nuclear reactor, loaded with a first core assembly, within the tunnel. The method further includes, during an operating period: in response to detecting a high-energy demand period: triggering operation of the nuclear reactor at a first capacity, directing a first portion of energy output to a charging station for charging electric vehicles, and directing a second portion, less than the first portion, of energy output to a gas sequestration subsystem; and, in response to detecting a low-energy demand period, triggering operation of the nuclear reactor at a second capacity less than the first capacity, directing a third portion of energy, less than the first portion, output to the charging station, and directing a fourth portion of energy, exceeding the second portion, output to the gas sequestration subsystem.

A method of compacting radioactive metal wastes comprising enclosing the radioactive metal waste in vacuo in a capsule, placing the capsule into a pressure container, and subjecting the capsule to an increased pressure at a high temperature to compact the waste. The compacting treatment is conducted in a state in which the atmosphere within the pressure container contains water molecules in an amount, in terms of the total weight W (g) thereof, the amount being preferably in the range of:1.3.times.10.sup.-6 .times.V.ltoreq.Wwherein V (cm.sup.3) is the volume of the compacting space in the pressure container. Alternatively, an oxide coating is formed on the outer surface of the capsule before the capsule is placed into the pressure container, or the formation of the oxide coating is followed by the compacting treatment conducted in the above-mentioned state.

This invention relates to a pusher placed in a magazine for irradiated fuel elements which allows displacement thereof for the cutting operations. The pusher according to the invention allows the displacement of elements of small section in a magazine of large section. At the end of a cutting operation, the pusher applies its blank against the auxiliary holding clamp forming a continuous surface and the element is pushed by a blade, the body of the pusher being immobilized.

A process for separating ceramic nuclear fuels out of metallic support mers or support member parts in which there adhere the nuclear fuels, especially subsequent to the burning down of the nuclear fuels in nuclear reactors. The ceramic nuclear fuels are washed off from the support member or carrier member part by means of a liquid jet which stands under a high pressure. The liquid jet is directed against the nuclear fuel, and the pressure of the liquid is set so high, that the nuclear fuel which adheres to the support member is completely removed. The liquid jet finds the transition from the ceramic nuclear fuel to the metallic support member material such that, even at a swelling of the fuel rod, and deformation of the support member part, there is achieved an efficient detaching of the nuclear fuel. The metallic support members or support member parts hereby remain intact and are segregated after the washing off of the nuclear fuel. Only the nuclear fuel fragments are introduced into the chemical solvent.

Apparatus and process for shearing long units, such as nuclear fuel bundles, into pieces of predetermined length for further processing. The apparatus comprises a sealable magazine for receiving the bundles, means for urging the bundle forward, a vertical and horizontal gag, or alternately two parallel-acting horizontal gags operated in conjunction with a vertical restraint, for compressing the front portion of the bundle, and a shear blade adjacent to the gags, whereby the nuclear fuel bundle may be urged forward in increments, compressed and sheared into pieces.

A SYSTEM FOR HANDLING IRRADIATED NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL BUNDLES PREPARATORY TO REPROCESSING THE IRRADIATED FUEL CONTAINED THEREIN IS DISCLOSED. THIS SYSTEM INCLUDES A FUEL BUNDLES CLAMPING TABLE INCLUDING MEANS TO REMOVEF BUNDLE END FITTING AND TO CLAMP THE BUNDLE IN A FIXED POSITION WHILE PERMITTING LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENT OF THE FUEL RODS THROUGH THE BUNDLE, A FUEL ROD PULLING ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE RODS AND FOR COLLECTING GROUPS OF RODS, A SHEAR FEED ASSEMBLY INCLUDING MEANS TO FEED GROUPS OF FUEL RODS INCREMENTALLY TO A SHEAR, AND A SHEAR ASSEMIBLY INCLUDING MEANS TO SIMULTANEOUSLY CUT TWO SMALL PIECES FROM THE END OF EACH ROD OF A SET WITH EACH SHEARING STROKE. A PROCESS FOR PERFORMING THE ABOVE-INDICATED OPERATIONS IS ALSO DISCLOSED. THIS SYSTEM IS SIMPLE, RELIABLE AND CAPABLE OF BEING REMOTELY OPERATED, DISASSEMBLED AND MODIFIED.
