    摘要: In a plane multi-digit type electric discharge device of the class comprising an insulator substrate, a plurality of pattern display units arranged in side-by-side relationship on the insulator substrate, each display unit including a plurality of segment electrodes which are arranged in a predetermined pattern, a plurality of electrically isolated counter electrodes respectively confronting the pattern display units, an upper substrate, at least the portions thereof confronting the pattern display units being transparent, and a common envelope containing above described component elements, there are provided a discharge sustaining electrode near the pattern display unit at the end from which scanning is to be commenced and a counter electrode confronting the discharge sustaining electrode thereby constantly sustaining an electric discharge between the discharge sustaining electrode and the last mentioned counter electrode. Further a coating of a radioactive substance is located near the discharge sustaining electrode for supplying thereto a sufficient quantity of electrons for initiating a discharge.

    摘要: Fire alarm system utilizing an aerosol detector of the type formed by outer and inner interconnected ion chambers with a single particle source located within the inner chamber. The particle source radiates charged particles emitted therefrom into the inner chamber as well as through the path of chamber interconnection into the outer ion chamber. The outer chamber communicates directly with atmosphere to be monitored and operates as a sensing ion chamber. The inner chamber, operates as a reference ion chamber, is only interconnected with the outer chamber, and is otherwise totally isolated from outside atmosphere to avoid contamination of the particle source therein. Two embodiments of aerosol detector are disclosed. The first has a radiation permeable, aerosol impermeable dielectric film, made of a material such as Mylar, Teflon or the like, mounted as a barrier across the path of chamber interconnections to permit charged particles emitted from the particle source to pass essentially uninfluenced therethrough while isolating the inner chamber from smoke and combustion aerosols to prevent contamination of the particle source. The dielectric film also provides a physical barrier which prevents a detached particle source from falling out of the inner chamber. The second embodiment is like the first with the addition of a second similar type dielectric film which covers over the particle source itself. The second film improves the operation characteristics of the device as well as providing an additional physical barrier to hold the particle source in place. A third embodiment provides for selective positioning of the radioactive source and a collector electrode in the outer chamber.

    摘要: A high intensity discharge lamp includes an electrically insulating arc tube. A sealed shroud encloses the arc tube. An electrically conductive frame member is disposed inside the shroud and is electrically connected to an electrical conductor that extends in the arc tube. Electrically conductive foil is fastened to the frame member and forms a closed loop that encircles a leg of the arc tube by an angle in a range of at least 270 degrees to 360 degrees. The foil can be connected to the frame member and to itself. A distance from an outer surface of a flange of the arc tube leg to a proximal edge of the foil can range from 1.5 to 8 mm. A width of the foil can range from 1 mm to 4 mm.

The radioactive body which is retained in a rivet head container, or the like, is staked to the interior surface of the cup shaped electrode, and to make sure that the radioactive source or its container does not project out into the chamber area, the mounting point of the electrode is dimpled so that the face of the mounted radioactive rivet is substantially flush with the general contour of the interior surface of the electrode.

    摘要: Radioactive materials are used to assist in starting a discharge in an electrodeless light source. The radioactive emissions predispose on the inner surface of the lamp envelope loosely bound charges which thereafter assist in initiating discharge. The radioactive material can be enclosed within the lamp envelope in gaseous or non-gaseous form. Preferred materials are krypton 85 and americium 241. In addition, the radioactive material can be dispersed in the lamp envelope material or can be a pellet imbedded in the envelope material. Finally, the radioactive material can be located in the termination fixture. Sources of alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays are suitable. Because charges accumulate with time on the inner surface of the lamp envelope, activity levels as low as 10.sup.-8 curie are effective as starting aids.
