Abstract:
A system and method for monitoring a surgical procedure, the system including a catheter guidance assembly including an extended working channel navigable to a target, a surgical device positionable through the extended working channel to access the target, at least one sensor disposed on either the extended working channel or the surgical device. The at least one sensor is configured to sense a characteristic of tissue proximate either or both of the extended working channel or the surgical device. The system further includes a computing device operably coupled to the sensor. The computing device is configured to receive the characteristic from the sensor and determine whether the tissue characteristic is indicative of the target or tissue other than the target.
Abstract:
An apparatus for treating inflammatory bowel diseases is provided. The apparatus includes a handle, a shaft extending distally from the handle, and an end effector disposed on a distal end of the shaft. The shaft is configured to be advanced within the colon of a patient. The end effector includes a radiating portion and a nozzle disposed thereon. The radiating portion is configured to emit energy therefrom and the nozzle is configured to emit a fluid therefrom. A method of treating inflammatory bowel diseases is also provided.
Abstract:
A surgical probe includes a connection hub, an antenna assembly, and an outer jacket. The antenna assembly is coupled to the connection hub, extends distally from the connection hub, and includes a radiating portion coupled thereto at the distal end thereof. The radiating portion is configured to deliver energy to tissue to treat tissue. The outer jacket is coupled to the connection hub, extends distally therefrom, and is disposed about the radiating portion. The outer jacket includes a distal end member configured to be spaced-apart from the radiating portion a target axial distance. One or more of the couplings between the antenna assembly and the connection hub, the radiating portion and the antenna assembly, and the outer jacket and the connection hub defines a flexible configuration permitting axial movement therebetween to maintain the target axial distance between the radiating portion and the distal end member.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes a flexible tube defining a proximal end and a distal end. An end effector, disposed at the distal end of the flexible tube, is configured for insertion into and advancement through a body cavity to a treatment target. The end effector is adapted to connect to a source of energy. The end effector includes an expandable member which can expand from an un-expanded state to an expanded state in order to circumferentially contact a bodily treatment target. The end effector further includes at least one heating member that may hear the expandable member such that the expandable member may thermally treat tissue that the expandable member contacts.
Abstract:
A system for ultrasound interrogation of a lung includes a memory, an electromagnetic (EM) board, an extended working channel (EWC), an EM sensor, a US transducer, and a processor. The memory stores a three dimensional (3D) model, a pathway plan for navigating a luminal network. An EM board generates an EM field. The EWC is configured to navigate the luminal network of a patient toward a target following the pathway plan and the EM sensor extends distally from the EWC and senses the EM field. The US transducer extends distally from a distal end of the EWC and generates US waves and receives US waves reflected from the luminal network and the processor processes the sensed EM field to synchronize a location of the EM sensor in the 3D model, to process the reflected US waves to generate images, or to integrate the generated images with the 3D model.
Abstract:
A method of treating bowel diseases includes introducing a fluid into a portion of a patients colon and applying energy thereto from an external energy source such that the fluid and the energy cooperate to treat tissue of the portion of the patients colon in contact with the fluid. Another method of treating inflammatory bowel diseases includes sealing a portion of a patients colon, introducing an electrically-conductive fluid thereto, and energizing an electrode disposed therein to treat tissue of the portion of the patients colon in contact with the electrically-conductive fluid. Another method of treating inflammatory bowel diseases includes sealing a portion of a patients colon and introducing a heated fluid at a temperature equal to or above 60 °C to treat tissue of the portion of the patients colon in contact with the heated fluid.
