The invention provides a novel composition for bleaching cellulose based materials, such as wood pulp and paper which includes using an effective amount of a source of an oxidant and an oxidatively stable bleach activator having structure (I) wherein Y1, Y3 and Y4 each represents a bridging group having zero, one, two or three carbon containing nodes for substitution, and Y2 is a bridging group having at least one carbon containing node for substitution. Each node contains a C(R), C(R1)(R2), or a C(R)2 unit. Each R may be H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, cylcoalkenyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkynyl, alkylaryl, halogen, alkoxy, or phenoxy, CH2CF3, CF3 and combinations thereof, or form a substituted or unsubstituted benzene ring, or together with a paired R substituent bound to the same carbon atom form a cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl ring; M is a transition metal; Q is any counterion; and L is any labile ligand.

The present invention concerns a multicomponent system for modifying, decomposing or bleaching lignin, lignin-containing materials or similar substances, and a method of using this system. The present invention discloses enzymes having xylanase activity. The xylanases are characterized in that they are active at a temperature of 80 DEG C or higher. The enzymes are obtainable from anaerobic thermophilic bacteria. The enzymes are suited for use in paper and pulp production processes. The invention also describes cloning and expression of genes having xylanase activity obtained from the deposited strains.

Also disclosed is a kraft pulp delignification mixture comprising in combination: (a) water; (b) from about 0.05 to about 0.3 moles per liter of a ketone as above; (c) from about 0.0008 to about 0.50 moles per liter of monopersulfuric acid; and (d) sufficient buffer to maintain the pH between about pH 6 and about pH 9.5.

Bleaching methods and formulations for bleaching/delignification processes for chemical pulp are provided. The bleaching methods utilize peroxide and an organomanganese complex under aqueous caustic conditions, increasing bleaching efficiency of the overall bleaching/delignification process. Chemical pulp having increased brightness can be obtained at decreased temperatures and with reduced stage time, resulting in reduced chemical consumption and improved energy efficiency.

The invention provides a method for the application of a bleaching agent to a substrate, the method comprising the treatment of the substrate in an aqueous system comprising a liquid bleaching agent in a closed container, the treatment being carried out at a ratio of liquor to substrate which does not exceed 3:1. Typically, the method is applied to the bleaching of textile fibres and may optionally comprise a bleaching and scouring treatment. The invention also provides a method for the removal of surplus bleaching agents following the bleaching treatment, the method comprising not more than three aqueous wash-off treatments of the substrate. In addition to facilitating the use of much reduced liquor levels, the method also allows for significant reductions to be achieved in usage levels of bleaching agents, auxiliary agents and rinsing agents, thereby reducing generation of waste liquors requiring disposal. Furthermore, treatment temperatures are also significantly lower than for prior art methods, providing yet further benefits in environmental and cost terms.
