    Abstract: Compositions and methods for improving the efficiency and reliability of the thermal molding process used to manufacture starch-bound articles having a cellular structural matrix. The inclusion of significant quantities of pregelatinized starch within the starch-based molding composition greatly expands the acceptable operating windows for a variety of compositional and processing variables, such as initial water concentration of the molding composition, amount (fill weight) of the composition placed into the mold, mold temperature, and vent hole size. Pregelatinized starch in a range from about 12 % to about 50 % by weight of the overall starch content of the molding composition has been shown to greatly moderate or offset increased system reactivity caused by, e.g., increasing the water concentration, fill weight, mold temperature, and vent hole size. The balance of the starch in the molding composition comprises ungelatinized starch granules, which gelate during the heated molding process. The molding composition further includes substantially homogeneously dispersed fibers of high aspect ratio, an inorganic filler, a mold release agent, and water.

    Abstract: The subject of the invention is a method for manufacturing a vapor-permeable insulation panel and a vapor-permeable insulation panel.
