Abstract:
Hydroxymethylfurfural is made from an aqueous hexose sugar solution, especially from a high fructose corn syrup product. By rapidly heating the sugar solution to the elevated temperatures involved as well as rapidly cooling the resultant product mixture, a limited per-pass conversion to HMF is obtained; correspondingly, however, the overall exposure of the HMF that is formed to acidic, elevated temperature conditions is also limited, so that byproducts are reduced. Separation and recovery of the products is simplified, and levels of HMF and other hexose dehydration products known to inhibit ethanol production by fermentation are reduced in the residual sugars product, to an extent whereby the residual sugars product is suited to be directly fermented to ethanol or for other uses.
Abstract:
A process for producing a food oil containing at least 50% monounsaturated fatty acids from palm oil is disclosed. Fatty acids are released from palm oil glycerides, such as by fat-splitting. The free fatty acids (FFA) are separated to obtain a fraction enriched in unsaturated palm fatty acid. This fraction is subject to a condensation reaction with glycerol to form an oil comprising mainly triglycerides (triacylglycerols). The condensation reaction is catalyzed by an enzyme.

A process is provided for carrying out an oxidation on a feed including levulinic acid and/or a levulinic acid oxidation precursor to succinic acid, one or more furanic oxidation precursors of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and a catalytically effective combination of cobalt, manganese, and bromide components for catalyzing the oxidation of the levulinic acid component and of the one or more furanic oxidation precursors to produce both succinic acid and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid products, which process comprises supplying the feed to a reactor vessel, supplying an oxidant, reacting the levulinic acid component and the one or more furanic oxidation precursors with the oxidant to produce both succinic acid and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and then recovering the succinic acid and FDCA products. A crude dehydration product from the dehydration of fructose, glucose or both, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, can be directly oxidized by the process to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and succinic acid.

A process is provided for carrying out an oxidation on a sprayable feed including a furanic substrate to be oxidized and a catalytically effective combination of cobalt, manganese, and bromide components for catalyzing the oxidation of the furanic substrate, which process comprises spraying the feed into a reactor vessel as a mist, supplying an oxidant, reacting the furanic substrate and the oxidant, and managing the exothermic temperature rise due to the reaction through a selection and control of the operating pressure within the reactor vessel. A crude dehydration product from the dehydration of fructose, glucose or both, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, can be directly oxidized by the process to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid in surprisingly increased yields.

Methods for forming ammonium salts of C4 diacids in a fermentation process with removal of divalent metal carbonate salts are disclosed. The pH of fermentation broths for production of C4 diacids is controlled by adding alkaline oxygen containing calcium or magnesium compounds, which forms divalent metal salts of the diacids. The divalent metal salts of the diacids are substituted with ammonium by introduction of ammonium salts at elevated temperature and pressure forming soluble ammonium salts thereof. C02 or bicarbonate is simultaneously added to the fennentation media at the elevated temperature and pressure. Reducing the temperature and pressure forms insoluble divalent metal carbonate salts that are separated from the solubilized ammonium diacid salts.

A modification is described of a dry grind process for producing ethanol and other co-products from whole grain, for example corn, wherein one or more solid/liquid separators act on a liquefaction discharge or mash, or act on a fermentation medium before the medium is introduced into a still for the production of ethanol, or act on both the liquefaction discharge and the fermentation medium to recover an oil fraction from the grain upstream of the still. The oil product is useful in animal feeds, in the production of biodiesel and in other applications.

A modification is described of a dry grind process for producing ethanol and other co-products from whole grain, whereby the mash is thermochemically treated by cooking the mash in the presence of an organic acid. The organic acid effectively hydrolyzes both the starch and hemicellulosic components in the milled corn to provide fermentable sugars from both the endosperm and other parts of the kernel, without, however, also producing fermentation-inhibiting levels of other known products of the acid hydrolysis of hemicellulosic materials, such as hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. Further, the organic acid is able to solubilize both the starch and the more recalcitrant hemicelluloses while only partially hydrolyzing the same, so that most of the starch and hemicelluloses are hydrolyzed to oligomers and the amount of chemically labile and reducing sugars is kept sufficiently low as to also not appreciably interfere with the fermentation to ethanol.
