Abstract:
There is provided a method of attenuating a respiratory infection in a subject, use of a composition for the manufacture of a medicament and a composition for treating respiratory infections comprising a preparation of Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula (SR), a non pathogenic thermophilic actinomycetes , which can stimulate the innate pulmonary immune response. This invention thus presents a novel preventive measure for acute viral or bacterial lung infections.
Abstract:
Linezolid is a member of a novel class of antibiotics, with resistance already being reported. We used whole-genome sequencing on three independent Streptococcus pneumoniae strains made resistant to linezolid in vitro in a step-by-step fashion. Analysis of the genome assemblies revealed mutations in the 23S rRNA gene in all mutants including, notably, G2576T, a previously recognized resistance mutation. Mutations in an additional 31 genes were also found in at least one of the three sequenced genomes. We concentrated our efforts on three new mutations that were found in at least two independent mutants. All three mutations were experimentally confirmed to be involved in antibiotic resistance. Mutations upstream of the ABC transporter genes SP_1114 and SP_2075 were correlated with increased expression of these genes and neighboring genes of the same operon. The hypothetical protein SP_0373 contains an RNA methyltransferase domain, and mutations within that domain were found in all S. pneumoniae linezolid-resistant strains. Interestingly, the SP_0373 ortholog was also mutated in a linezolid-resistant clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolate.
Abstract:
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a new method for producing oligosaccharides using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) in an electrodialysis cell. The method allow for the simultaneous transformation of polysaccharides into oligosaccharides and the demineralization of the resulting oligosaccharides.
Abstract:
A method and system for testing an optical network for defects in multiple light paths are presented. A pulsed monitoring light signal is transmitted in the network, and reflected by encoders in each light path. The encoders encode the light signal according to encoding functions having a low cross-correlation to each other. The return light signal from all light paths is decoded, either optically or electronically, according to decoding functions correlated to each of the encoding functions, and analysed to determine if a defect is present in any given light path. According to some embodiments, the location of the defect along the light path may also be determined.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for identifying a VISA strain in a sample comprising measuring SAV2095 expression levels, a kit and use of SAV2095 for same. The present invention also relates to a method for facilitating the development of an individualized treatment regimen comprising measuring the expression level of SAV2095. The present invention further relates to a method for monitoring the progression of a vancomycin treatment of an infection comprising measuring the expression level of SAV2095. The present invention also relates to the detection of Staphylococcus aureus in a sample.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the field of neuropathological disorders involving impaired locomotor functions. More specifically, the present invention relates to a composition and method for inducing and restoring locomotor functions, such as basic walking movements in the lower extremities of chronic spinal cord injured animals, such as paraplegic or tetraplegic individuals.
Abstract:
An array antenna system comprising an array of antenna elements (22/1,...,22/10) and a receiver (12 0 ,..., 12 7 ) which uses a subset of the signals from the antenna elements, the selection of the subset of signals which should be used for a particular user being made on the basis of measurements of potential performance of the receiver with each subset of signals, combined, rather than of each individual signal.
Abstract:
A method for electric discharge machining (EDM) with a ductile carbonaceous electrode, to automate roughing, finishing, polishing and texturing operations on a electrically conductive material. The EDM method comprises using a ductile electrically conductive electrode made of carbon-polymer composite material. Prior to electric discharge machining, the electrode is made by heating uniformly a prescribed volume of said ductile electrode material, at a temperature close to the melting point temperature of the polymer matrix. The composite material is then molded into the desired electrode shape by pressing the soft material against a template, a mold model, a replicate of the workpiece or part of the workpiece. The formed electrode is then used to machine the desired shape and surface finish on the said workpiece using proper electric discharge machining techniques. When the dimensions and surface of the electrode are altered by wear, the same electrode can be rectified quickly and repetitively, by following the initial procedure of softening and pressing until the workpiece is complete.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a 2227-bp DNA fragment that confers antiphage activity. Two proteins encoded by this DNA sequence are responsible for the phage resistance phenotype. When introduced in Lactococcus lactis phage-sensitive strain, this DNA fragment aborts infection of phages of the 936 and P335 species.
Abstract:
