Abstract:
There is disclosed a porous emboli deflector for preventing cerebral emboli while maintaining cerebral blood flow during an endovascular or open surgical procedure. The device prevents the entrance of emboli of a size able to cause stroke (such as greater than 100 microns) from entering either the right or left common carotid arteries, and/or the right or left vertebral arteries by deflecting emboli downstream of these vessels. The device can be placed prior to any manipulation of the heart or aorta allowing maximal protection of the brain during the index procedure. The deflector has a low profile within the aorta which allows sheaths, catheters, or wires used in the index procedure to pass. The deflector shaft could have a first portion and a second portion, the second portion being more flexible than the first portion. The deflector frame can include one, two, or more movable structures, such as hinges. Also disclosed are methods for insertion and removal of the deflector.

Abstract:
An intraocular lens is disclosed, with an optic that changes shape in response to a deforming force exerted by the zonules of the eye. A haptic supports the optic around its equator and couples the optic to the capsular bag of the eye. The region of contact between the optic and the haptic extends into the edge of the optic, similar to the interface between a bicycle tire and the rim that holds it in place. The haptic may be stiffer than the optic. The haptic may have the same refractive index as the optic. The haptic may include a saddle-shaped portion in contact with the adjustable optic, with a convex profile along an optical axis; and a concave profile in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis.
Abstract:
An intervertebral implant and associated method. The intervertebral implant can include a first component having a first articulating surface and a first bone engagement surface for engaging a first vertebra, and a second component having a second articulating surface and a second bone engagement surface for engaging a second vertebra adjacent to the first vertebra. The first and second articulating surfaces articulate with each other for substantially replicating a natural spinal movement. The first and second bone engagement surfaces define an outer surface substantially shaped as an envelope of five cylinders.
Abstract:
An implantable device is provided for controlling at least one of shape and size of an anatomical structure or lumen. An implantable device has an adjustable member configured to adjust the dimensions of the implantable device. An adjustment tool is configured to actuate the adjustable member and provide for adjustment before, during and after the anatomical structure or lumen resumes near normal to normal physiologic function.
Abstract:
Devices, systems and methods are provided for stenting body lumens. In particular, stents are provided which are advanceabke directly over a guidewire and expandable within a target location of a body lumen by etraction of the guidewire and/or by releasing consstraining element(s) disposed around at least a portion of the stent. Typically the constraining element(s) have the form of one or more bands or layers of material which hold the stent in an unexpanded configuration. These stent designs allow delivery to a body lumen without the need for a number of additional devices which are typically used in the delivery of conventional stents, thereby reducing the profile of the stent during deliver, increasing the flexibility of the stent during delivery to allow passage through more tortous pathways, and allowing the delivery of branched or otherwise connected stents to body lumens, such as branched lumens.
Abstract:
Medical devices (210) that provide valves for regulating fluid flow through a body vessel are provided. The venous valves include a support frame (216) having one or more adaptations (224) for forming a leak path (226) between the support frame (216) and an interior wall of a body vessel in which the valve is implanted. A controlled amount of retrograde flow is able to flow through the lead path (226) when the valve is implanted in a body vessel (280).
Abstract:
The present invention relates to prostheses for treating spinal pathologies, and more specifically to an artificial disc implant. The implant includes an inferior implant (104, 604, 704, 804) for placement on an inferior vertebra (2b) and a superior implant (102, 602, 702, 802) for placement on a superior vertebra (2a). The implant also includes an articulating interface (116) that is generally saddle-shaped and ramped from the anterior of the vertebrae to the posterior of the vertebrae.
