An ink cartridge (46) for an ink management system includes a piston (50) having a stepped back surface (86) for improved reflection of ultrasonic acoustic waves through presentation of flat surfaces normal to the incident waves, thus permitting the piston to possess a preferred cone shape and structural rigidity. Heights of steps are preferably separated by even multiples of one-quarter wavelength of incident acoustic waves to avoid destructive interference from multiple reflections. Improved reflectivity overcomes problems with using an acoustic range finder to measure the position of the piston.

An improved ink cartridge (10) of the type used to dispense ink in automatic lithographic presses. The ink cartridge (10) comprises a hollow cylindrical body (12) for holding a supply of extrudable ink, a plunger (14) and a dispensing fitment (16). The improvement comprises a valve member (50) mounted over a central aperture (38) in the dispensing fitment (16), and a flexible molded plastic spring (44) that biases the valve member (50) in the closed position. The valve member (50) opens when subjected to pressure from the ink and closes automatically and completely when the ink pressure is less than the biasing force of the flexible spring (44).

The invention disclosed herein relates to apparatus, systems and associated methods for supplying ink to printing presses. The ink supply systems operate in combination with a printing system and comprise a bulk ink supply system and a supplemental ink supply system. The bulk ink supply system and supplemental ink supply system can jointly, or individually, supply inks of different colors to individual press units of a printing press. The bulk ink supply system includes one or more supply lines leading to the printing press for supplying ink to the printing press in bulk. The supplemental ink supply system includes one or more ink canisters for supplying ink to the printing press. An intermediate ink supply system may be operated in addition to and/or in place of the bulk and/or supplemental ink supply system.
