Abstract:
Coinitiator systems for photopolymerization of photopolymerizable compounds containing olefinic unsaturation are described. Such systems comprise (A) either a combination of at least one coumarin photoinitiator and at least one coinitiator compound which is a hydrogen atom donating coinitiator or an electron donating coinitiator, or at least one coumarin photoinitiator having in its molecular structure at least one photosensitizing amino group; and (B) at least one compound containing at least one maleimide or maleic anhydride derivative. Photopolymerizable compositions which comprise, in addition to such a coinitiator system, at least one photopolymerizable compound containing olefinic unsaturation are also described.
Abstract:
A system for detecting polynucleotide hybridization. A polynucleotide is immobilized on a surface of a piezoelectric crystal. The resonance frequency of the piezoelectric crystal is measured through means for determining the resonant frequency of a piezoelectric crystal. A separate source of polynucleotide is exposed to the polynucleotide-coated piezoelectric crystal for a sufficient length of time and under conditions suitable for hybridization. The resonance frequency of the crystal is then again measured, and the difference between the resonance frequency before and after the incubation period will indicate the extent of hybridization.
Abstract:
The system provides new methods and processes for the reaction of polymeric/oligomeric substrates with reactants comprising alkyne/alkene and/or protic nucleophilic moieties to afford functionalized polymeric/oligomeric products through the utilization of homogenous and/or heterogenous gold catalysis. More specifically, the system provides routes for reaction of polymeric/oligomeric substrates comprising varying degrees of aromatic character with alkyne/alkene bearing molecules to afford a functionalized polymeric/oligomeric product. The system additionally provides pathways wherein the inverse methodology is realized, providing functionalized materials from the reaction of polymeric substrates bearing alkyne/alkene moieties with aromatic and/or protic nucleophilic reagents. Furthermore, in a tangential methodology, the system affords functionalized polymeric materials from the reaction of polymeric substrates bearing protic nucleophilic substituents with alkyne/alkene containing molecules. The system provides pathways for the facile modification of commodity polymer materials in order to produce value-added materials utilizing current polymer infrastructure, commodity polymer feedstocks, and post-consumer plastic waste.

A method for dispersing oil spilled into the aqueous environment comprising the treatment of the spilled oil with an oil dispersant composition comprising a phospholipid and a polysaccharide derivative is disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses polyols synthesized from vemonia oil. The process for synthesizing a vemonia oil-based polyol involves reducing vernonia oil to vernolic acid; heating the vernolic acid at elevated temperatures to form oligomers; and forming the polyol by transesterification of the oligomers with glycerol. The polyols synthesized according to the present invention have lower viscosity values at similar hydroxyl values compared to polyols synthesized from other vegetable oils. The lower viscosity values are of importance in the synthesis of foams as it promotes foam growth.
