Provided is a process for hydrogenolysis of a polymer that includes providing in a reactor the polymer, hydrogen gas and a supported organometallic catalyst. The supported organometallic catalyst formed from an organometallic complex precatalyst and an acidic metal oxide support. The polymer is reacted with the supported organometallic catalyst in the presence of the hydrogen gas at a predetermined temperature in the reactor to produce a reduced polymer product having a weight average molecular weight less than the polymer.

Poly(acrylic acid)-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) in a feed stream is converted into poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in a hydrothermal treatment (HTT) reactor. The total energy used to degrade the SAP into PAA is less than about 50 MJ/kg SAP.

The disclosure provides a functionalized hollow silica particle comprising: a core/shell silica particle comprising a template core particle and a silica treatment, wherein the core/shell silica particle has an outer surface; and wherein the silica treatment is prepared using a water-based silica precursor; a functionalized surface on the core/shell silica particle, wherein the functionalized surface is prepared using sulfonic acid, phosphonic esters, carboxylic acid, amines, epoxides, or boronic acids, and wherein the template core particle is removed before or after functionation. These inorganic hollow particles are useful as hiding or opacifying agents in coating and molding compositions. They are also useful as photonic band gap or thermal insulation materials.

A process for converting a molten polymeric material is provided. The process includes effecting disposition of a molten polymeric material, having at least one carbon-carbon double bond, in sufficient proximity to a catalyst material within a reaction zone, to effect a reactive process that effects generation of a reaction product. The reactive process effects cleaving of at least one carbon-carbon double bond. The catalyst material includes [Fe-Cu-Mo-P]/Al 2 0 3 prepared by binding a ferrous-copper complex to an elumina support to generate an intermediate material, and reacting the intermediate material with heteropolyacid.
