A floating modular system to support oil absorbent booms that provide continuous protection for enclosed or semi-enclosed water bodies from floating hydrocarbons. The invention refers to an anchored stable modular system, consisting of floats (3) hydrodynamic in shape to which are attached, by means of joints, oil absorbent booms (2). Tie-rods (6) connect the floats (3) to each other. The floating system allows the continuous use in the field of booms with absorbent material that selectively absorb oil from the surface of the water and may be applied in areas where surface drift current causes its perpendicular positioning and consequently that of the attached to it oil absorbent booms (2) against the direction of the current. This is due to the hydrodynamic shape of the distal floats (3). Generally, the special hydrodynamic features of the system allow it to use water circulation and finally to play the part of a stationary vacuum cleaner continuously absorbing oil from the surface of the water. The invention can be used for the continuous environmental protection of ports, lakes, marinas, etc.

A combined skirted oil-sorbing boom and oil-sorbing sweep has a buoyant inner core and an oil-sorbent outer core of a spirally wound sheet of polymeric, oleophilic, hydrophobic microfibers. Adhesively bonded to a sheet of the microfibers at the outer face of the outer core is an open-mesh netting of polymeric monofilaments that are fused at their crossings. The netting and the sheet to which it is adhered extend from the outer core to form a depending skirt which acts as a barrier to oil that is being sorbed by the microfibers. The buoyant inner core can be an open-cell foam that sorbs oil slowly, thus supplementing the oil-sorbing capability without significant loss of freeboard.

A method of deploying a containment boom is provided whereby an elongated material such as a sheet, yam, or yarn bundle, is formed into a roll and the material is pulled from the interior of the roll to create a helical structure. A pull rope is threaded through the interior of the roll and is deployed along with the material, such that the material is wrapped around the pull rope. The pull rope prevents the boom from stretching and distorting the helical structure formed by the material, as well as preventing the material from self-wringing. Multiple rolls of material may be provided in a single boom package arranged in coaxial alignment. When the materials are connected in parallel, they are integrated into a single boom having concentrically wrapped materials, thereby providing for greater stability and functionality.

A containment machine for containing a contaminant in a body of water includes a set of buoy assemblies arrangeable in the body of water to form the end of a containment barrier for continuing the flow of contaminant in the body of water, cables being extendable from the respective buoy assemblies for holding barrier structure such as a set of truss/curtain assemblies which are connectable to form the containment barrier, a buoy sectional computer control unit in each of said buoy assemblies for receiving signals relating to the location of the respective barrier structure, the tension in the cables and the like, and for transmitting signals to a containment machine central computer control unit. The buoy sectional computer control unit also receives signals from a containment machine central computer control unit to establish set points for adjustment signals sent to the items under its control. Barges for each buoy assembly hold the barrier structure and other equipment for employment in the containment barrier, and a similar computer network exists including a barrier machine central computer control unit and barge sectional computer control units. A process for using the containment machine is also included.

The present invention pertains to a floating type oil recovery system. More specifically, in the floating type oil recovery system, an oil recovery device is disposed in the middle of a fence, which is connected to towing boats, so as to collect oil spilt at sea into one place to recover the same. The floating type oil recovery system includes a main wire for connecting ships; sub wires for connecting the main wire and a fence; a towing wire for connecting the ships and an oil recovery device; a fence connected with a plurality of blocking plates in the shape of "V", mounted with buoyancy tanks in the back and forth direction of the respective blocking plates, and having a plurality of towing hooks mounted on the front surfaces of the blocking plates so as to be connected with the sub wires; and an oil recovery device having buoyancy tanks mounted at both side surfaces, a first tank mounted at a front portion and a second tank mounted at a rear portion so that the oil recovery device sucks the oil, which is collected in the second tank, so as to recover the oil. Therefore, the present invention enables to work stably on the rough sea with somewhat high waves by mounting the fence on the sea, which is connected to the plurality of blocking plates in the shape of "V" and disposed with the oil recovery device in the middle of the fence. In addition, the oil spilt at sea is blocked so that the oil cannot be leaked via the fence or the oil recovery device, and the oil, which is collected in the second tank of the oil recovery device, may be completely recovered.
