A coolant-resistant and thermally stable primer composition comprising an organic-functional silane, which is the reaction product of (1) at least one non-isocyanate-functional silane and at least one isocyanato-functional silane or (2) a non-isocyanate organofunctional silone and polyisocyanate, is provided. The primer composition additionally comprise a phenoxy resin, a phenolic resin and optionally talc. A method for bonding an elastomer to a metal also is provided.

The present invention relates in part to a lignin composition and a method of fabricating a lignin composition. The invention also relates in part to a method of using a lignin composition to adsorb onto a petrochemical oil comprising the steps of providing a solution of lignin in an alcohol, providing an oil on a liquid surface, contacting the oil with the solution of lignin in an alcohol, adsorbing the lignin to the oil, and removing the adsorbed oil from the surface of the liquid.

The present invention relates to an adhesive formulation comprising lignin, suitable for use in the manufacture of for example wood products.The lignin is provided in the form of a solution or dispersion or in dry solid form, such as in the form of a powder. The adhesive formulation also comprises phenol- formaldehyde (PF) resin and/or lignin-phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) resin. The adhesive formulation may also comprise extenders, hardeners, fillers and other additives, to achieve an adhesive formulation useful in the manufacture of for example wood products, such as plywood and laminated veneer lumber (LVL).The adhesive formulation can also be used in the manufacture of laminates and oriented strand boards.

The present invention relates to a liquid lignin mixture comprising 3-50 wt% methanol, 12-50 wt% ligninand5-85 wt% aqueous alkali solution wherein the concentration of said aqueous alkali solution is 1 to 50 wt% of alkali in water, based on the weight of said alkali solution prior to mixing with the other components of the mixture. The liquid lignin mixture can be used to manufacture lignin-based phenolic resins, which are particularly useful in the manufacture of laminates.

Most processes currently being proposed and/or used for the production of lignin from kraft or soda black liquors are capable of producing two main types of lignin: high residual content (HRC) lignin and low residual content (LRC) lignin. Surprisingly, it was discovered that HRC lignin, is a suitable ingredient in alkaline adhesives, particularly wood adhesives of the phenolic type (e.g. resole resins). This biomaterial is environmentally green and remarkably low cost, which makes it an industrially viable material to be used as a novel and major ingredient in phenolic adhesives for the manufacture of exterior grade plywood, laminated veneer lumber, oriented strand board (OSB) and other wood products - this was successfully demonstrated in a number of laboratory experiments as well as several different mill trials. The composition, preparation and application of such wood adhesives are hereby disclosed.

The invention relates to an aqueous adhesive composition which comprises an unsaturated elastomer latex and a phenol-aldehyde resin consisting of at least: an aromatic polyaldehyde having at least two aldehyde functions, including at least one aromatic ring; a polyphenol comprising at least one aromatic ring: in the event of a single aromatic ring, the latter has two or three hydroxyl functions in meta position relative to one another or relative to each other. The rest of the ring is non-substituted. In the event of a plurality of aromatic rings, at least two of same each have two or three hydroxyl functions in meta position relative to one another or relative to each other. The two ortho positions of at least one of said hydroxyl functions are non-substituted. The weight ratio of polyphenol to polyaldehyde is no lower than 3.0.

A powder primer composition particularly useful as a primer intended to be used in conjunction with an adhesive topcoat in rubber to metal bonding. And a method for bonding an elastomeric substrate to a metallic substrate comprising, applying a powder primer composition onto one of said substrates, wherein the powder primer composition comprises a rubbery polymer and at least one of a phenolic resin and a phenoxy resin, applying an adhesive covercoat to form a coated substrate, contacting the coated substrate with the other of said substrates, and heating the contacted substrates to effect bonding of the metallic substrate to the elastomer.
