Abstract: Disclosed herein are programmable, conditionally activated small interfering RNA constructs (Cond-siRNAs) and methods of making and using the same as therapeutic agents. The Cond-siRNA comprises a sensor strand, a core strand, and a guide strand, which crossover to form a sensor duplex and a RNAi duplex attached to each other to form a single structure. Upon binding an input strand to the sensor strand, the Cond- siRNA is activated and releases RNAi targeting a desired gene.

Abstract: A microfluidic flow restrictor that uses micron-sized beads to impede flow is described. The flow rate can be adjusted by adding or removing the beads using injection needles through self-sealing ports, one injection needle injecting or aspirating beads and another injection needle pushing or pulling fluid from outside of a bead trap within the flow restrictor. In alternative embodiments, the beads or other filler material can be trapped in a manifold bead trap such that they block a subset of fluid channels of the flow restrictor, allowing fluid to flow freely through the rest of the fluid channels. The flow restrictor can be integrated with a contact lens or implantable medical device for use in dispensing liquid therapeutic agents at flow rates of microliters per minute or moving body fluids at a controlled rate from one part of the body to another.

Abstract: Measurement of target analytes is carried out with an enzyme-based sensor. The enzyme hydrogel is protected by a porous layer of a metallic material. The size of the pores is small enough to prevent degradation of the enzyme layer caused by the immune system of an organism, but large enough to allow transfer of molecules that participate in the electrochemical reaction allowing the enzyme to detect the target analytes.

Abstract: Luminescent solar concentrators having a grid-based PV design can be implemented in many different ways. In several embodiments, the LSC is implemented using infrared luminophore technology combined with a PV design implementing a grid of PV cells. LSCs can incorporate quantum dots that absorb uniformly across the visible spectrum and photoluminesce down-shifted energy light in the infrared wavelength regime. Some embodiments include PV cells utilizing micro-grid structures that can be implemented for scalable and controllably transparent applications, such as but not limited to power windows targeted for building integrated photovoltaic applications. In a number of embodiments, the LSCs can utilize a unique PV cell form factor and spectral filter coatings to increase the thermal insulation of the window and enhance photocurrent capture by a silicon micro-grid.

Abstract: Certain aspects pertain to a cross-amplitude modulation (xAM) ultrasound transducer system that include one or more transducers, and first and second subapertures of transducer elements of the one or more transducers. The first subaperture configured to transmit a first ultrasound plane wave when excited. The second subaperture configured to transmit a second ultrasound plane wave when excited. The second ultrasound plane wave is noncollinear to the first ultrasound plane wave and axisymmetric to the first ultrasound plane wave about a bisector. The first and second subapertures are configured to transmit an xAM ultrasound pulse sequence by transmitting the first ultrasound plane wave, transmitting the second ultrasound plane wave, and simultaneously transmitting both first and second ultrasound plane waves. The first and second ultrasound plane wave are configured to generate an acoustic pressure that is above a threshold along the bisector.

Abstract: A dual frequency ultrasonic and sonic actuator with constrained impact mass is presented. According to one aspect, displacement of the impact mass is constrained by cavity to which ultrasonic stress from the tip of a horn is applied. According to another aspect, the displacement of the impact mass is constrained by a spring attached to the tip of the horn. According to another aspect, the displacement of the impact mass is constrained by a flexure. The constrained impact mass converts the ultrasonic stress to lower frequency sonic stress that is coupled to a transmitting element for transmission through a surface. According to one aspect, the transmitting element is a longitudinal probe. According to another aspect, the transmitting element is a drill bit used to penetrate though the surface. According to another aspect, the transmitting element is a thumper used to transmit elastic waves though the surface.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a wearable phototherapy eye device. In an example, phototherapy can be controlled by varying an emission property of light emitted from the wearable phototherapy eye device to a user eye. The wearable phototherapy eye device also includes controls, such as electrical, mechanical, and/or electro-mechanical controls, to vary the emission property of the light based on an emission target associated with a sleep phase.

Abstract: Bifacial solar cells have been gaining momentum due to their promise of reducing the price of photovoltaic generated electricity by increasing power output. In addition to front side illumination, bifacial solar cells can also accept photons incident on the rear side. In many embodiments, increased power output values of up to and around 50% can be achieved. In some circumstances, other values can be achieved. For example, ~40- 70% under cloudy conditions and between ~13-35% under sunny conditions, depending on the height of the ground clearance, can be achieved. Other factors such as but not limited to the (spectral) albedo of the surroundings as well as the geometry in which the cells are mounted can strongly influence the power output. As can readily be appreciated, the exact amount of increased power output can vary widely depending on the configuration and operating conditions of the bifacial solar cell.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for detecting microbial pathogens in a sample suspected of containing the pathogens. The method includes combining loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reagents and a polymer gel, such as a hydrogel, together with the sample to form a mixture. The gel polymerizes over a short time to immobilize the viral particles within the mixture. If target DNA/RNA are present in the sample, amplicons are produced. The target microorganisms are detected by visually detecting the presence or absence of the amplicons. The target microorganism concentrations may be determined based on the number of fluorescent amplicon dots after the reaction using a smartphone or a fluorescent microscope. The method may be employed for rapidly and inexpensively quantifying microbial pathogens in environmental water samples with high sensitivity.
