Thermoplastic polyurethanes having an alternating sequence of hard and soft segments in which a nanostructured polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane diol is used as a chain extender to form a crystalline hard segment constituting SMPs. Critical selection of the type, molecular weight and ratios of hydrophilic to hydrophobic diol, isocyanate to hydroxyl groups, average molecular weight of the diol component, the amount of water in the reaction mixture produces a polyurethane having high slip, Shore A Hardness values, wet tensile strength and tear strength. This invention also includes uses of the polyurethane in catheters, shaving products, synthetic valves, veins and arteries, stents, ports, shunts and coatings. Preferably, the polyurethane is used in combination with a filler for application to rubber gloves. In addition, dispersions, lotions, gels and solutions can be formed of the polyurethane.

The composition, preferably comprises (1) 30-80 parts by weight of urethane (meth)acrylate obtained by reacting (A) a polyol compound, (B) a polyisocyanate compound, and (C) a hydroyxl group-containing (meth)acrylate compound, (2) 0.01-10 parts by weight of a polydimethylsiloxane compound which contains a urethane bond and a (meth)acryloyl group in the molecule, and (3) 10-70 parts by weight of a polymerizable diluent containing a polymerizable monofunctional vinyl monomer which can copolymerize with the component (1) and component (2), provided that the total of the component (1), component (2), and component (3) is 100 parts by weight.

An aqueous curable resin composition comprising the aqueous resin as an indispensable component can provide a cured product which is excellent in not only durability, such as acid rain resistance and gloss retention at the time of exposure, but also contamination resistance upon being exposed to outdoors.

Silicone modified polyurethane compositions having low surface energy characteristics comprise a polyurethane matrix in which 1-30 % of a silicone compound is dispersed. The low surface energy of surface coatings comprised of these silicone modified polyurethanes provides environmentally safe and effective means of managing the effects of marine growth on vessels and static marine structures by the formation of a fouling release surface which enables simple and effective removal of marine organisms without damage to the surface coating. Silicone modified polyurethanes according to the invention also provide a useful alternative to polyester gel coats in fibreglass reinforced plastic boats and the like.
