The invention concerns a device for diffusing gas microbubbles in a liquid. Said device can be used for generating microbubbles required for clarification by flotation of a liquid loaded with suspended matter. It can also be used for facilitating dissolution of the gas in the liquid. The method and the device of the invention are particularly designed to replace the air dissolving device (that is, the microbubble generator) in installations for clarification by dissolved air flotation. The device consists of a rotating gas diffuser housed in a body (2) wherein the liquid circulates. The high rotational speed of the diffuser enables to generate considerable friction between the liquid and the surface of the diffuser, thereby drawing from the diffuser very fine bubbles and dispersing them in the liquid.

A separation system (10) is disclosed for use with a treatment tank (14), such as a flotation tank or decant tank, to separate particles and/or gases from a liquid suspension stream (20). The system is coupled to a liquid source comprising the liquid suspension stream. A hydrocyclone (18) directs the liquid suspension stream through a first chamber or passage in a generally helical fashion (32) along a cylindrical wall (24) where bubbles-to-particulate aggregates (16) are formed. A second chamber (34) encloses an outlet (26) of the hydrocyclone and may take many forms, including a generally concentric or parabolic form, and acts to decelerate the liquid and deliver the liquid to a third chamber (38) from which bubbles (40) escape the liquid. The liquid drops from the third chamber into the treatment tank in a manner which only minimally disturbs liquid (44) which is already in the treatment tank.

The flotation tank (130) further includes a tank outlet for exiting processed effluent from the tank.

An apparatus (12) and method for deinking waste paper pulp using a foam flotation process to recycle printed waste paper for the manufacture of new paper. Pulped printed paper is fed as a slurry to an inlet (26) of a shallow tank (14). Internal guide walls (16) in the tank (14) establish a flow path (26) from the inlet to an outlet (28). The walls (16) are sized and positioned to create a generally uniform cross-sectional flow area. A plurality of modules (20) are disposed along the flow path (18). Each module (20) includes at least one injector (22) that aerates the flow and an extractor (24) that removes floated ink foam. A portion of the flow from each module (22) is recycled to an upstream module, preferably by a conduit (46a) and associated pump (46b). In a preferred form, an injector (22) (or injectors) alone located at the inlet is fed by the next downstream module (22) and an extractor (24) alone is located near the outlet (28). The invention also includes a main recycling loop (50) from the downstream end (18a) of the flow path to the upstream end. This main recycling loop (50) has a large flow rate compared to the recycled flow between the modules (22).

The use of multiple nozzles (2) and corresponding draft tubes within the pipe (3) is also described.
