The present invention relates to nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, compositions thereof and NLO devices using polymeric matrices supporting a second order NLO material defined by the formula (I):ED-B-EW where ED is an electron donating moiety, B is a bridging moiety, and EW is the electron withdrawing moiety (terminal acceptor group) defined by formula (II), where C1 is a carbon atom linked through a double bond to a cyclic or an acylic carbon atom in the bridging moiety, and A1, A2, A3 or A4 are the same or different from one another, each of which is an electron withdrawing group such as CN, COR, COOR, COOH or CH=C(R)2 where R is a C1-6 alkyl.
Abstract:
In a method using organic vapor phase deposition (OCPD), for the growth of thin films of optically nonlinear organic salts, a volatile precursor of each component of the salt is carried as a vapor to a hot-wall reaction chamber by independently controlled streams of carrier gas. The components react to form a polycrystalline thin film on substrates of glass and gold. Excess reactants and reaction products are purged from the system by the carrier gas. For example, the method provides the growth of polycrystalline, optically nonlinear thin films of 4'-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) with >95% purity.

The specification identifies dithiolenes which give good performance as the critical region of an optical switch. The dithiolenes have the formula shown in Figure 1 wherein: (A) the R groups, any two of which may be the same or different, are selected so as to tune the absorption bands of the molecule for use at the operational wavelength and/or to act as bridges to join molecules together; (B) the X groups, any two of which may be the same or different, are selected from S and Se; (C) M is selected from Ni, Pt, Pd and Cu; (D) C = -1 or 0; and (E) (i) when C = -1, Y is a cation to render the molecule electrically neutral; preferably Y is selected from ammonium, substituted ammonium, Na?+, Li+ and K+¿, (ii) when C = 0, Y is absent (since the molecule is neutral there is no change to balance). The dithiolene may be diluted with an organic polymer selected from polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, such as polymethymethacrylate , polycarbonates, polyisobutylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene and polysiloxane.
