Abstract: Enhancements to adaptive bit rate techniques are described that relate to selection of the initial bit rate with which video content is delivered. The bandwidth available to a client device is estimated by determining the time required by the client device to download a specific amount of content, e.g., the "above-the-fold" portion of a requested web page. An initial bit rate is selected for video content associated with 10 the page that is within the estimated available bandwidth.
