Abstract: The present invention relates to a pelvic airbag (42). The pelvic airbag has a front panel and a rear panel that is attached to the front panel. The airbag is made of metal, plastic, or combinations of metal and plastic and is configured such that it maybe retained in a vehicle door between the inner skin and the trim panel. The airbag is further constructed such that when it is in the uninflated configuration, the thickness of the airbag is between about 2 to about 25 millimeters. An attachment mechanism (44) may also be attached to the airbag. The attachment mechanism is designed to attach the airbag to the vehicle door. Additionally, an inflator housing may be attached to the rear panel. The inflator housing houses an inflator that is designed to inflate the airbag in the event of an accident or crash.

Abstract: An inflator device including a housing defining a storage chamber and a supply of gas generant material disposed within the storage chamber. The inflator device includes an initiator assembly having an initiator in actuating communication with the supply of gas generant material. A moisture barrier member is disposed between the initiator assembly and the supply of gas generant material. The moisture barrier member acts to prevent moisture transmission from the initiator assembly to the supply of gas generant material. Upon actuation of the initiator, however, the moisture barrier member ruptures to permit reaction initiating communication between the initiator and at least a portion of the supply of gas generant material contained within the inflator device.

Abstract: The applique film airbag cover includes a substrate and an applique film. The substrate includes a tear seam to permit the emergence of a contained inflatable cushion. The applique film is disposed on an exposed surface of the substrate and is disposed across at least one tear seam in the substrate. The substrate may include contours that can be aligned with an emblem design on the applique film to produce a three-dimensional emblem. In response to expansion of the contained cushion, the tear seam and applique film rupture to permit the cushion to emerge through the cover.

Abstract: The motion damper includes a damper wall (16), damper stages (14), and a damper head (12). The damper wall and damper stages are successively smaller in a size and have a nested relationship. The damper wall and damper stages are each flexibly attached to an adjacent damper stage or the damper wall such that the damper stages may deploy in a telescopic fashion away from the damper wall. The damper head is attached to a smallest damper stage. As a result, the damper stages change in position relative to the damper wall and relative to each other to absorb the kinetic energy of objects attached to the damper head and damper wall.

Abstract: An integral initiator assembly and an inflator device including the integral initiator assembly. The integral initiator assembly including a body having a first end including an opening. An initiator canister including a reactive charge and a conductive pin is joined to the body in discharge alignment with the first end opening by an injection-molded material. At least two gas exit holes are included in the body and positioned radially relative to a longitudinal axis of the initiator canister. The gas exit holes in gas flow communication with a gas flow space between an inside surface of the body and the initiator canister to allow inflation gas to exit the integral initiator assembly. A rupturable disk seals the opening of the first end. The integral initiator assembly is attached to the body at the first end over the sealed opening and filled with inflation gas to form an inflator device. Actuation of the reactive charge ruptures the rupturable disk and the pressurized inflation gas enters the gas flow space and exits through the gas exit holes.

Abstract: An apparatus for activating a selected one or more restraint devices located in a vehicle is provided. The apparatus reliably and inexpensively activates restraint devices upon the receipt of one or more appropriate signals. The apparatus includes a control unit having a housing enclosing a processor, a circuit board, and a plurality of initiator assemblies. Explosive transfer lines are inter-connected to the initiator assemblies at a first end, and to the restraint devices at a second end. Upon the receipt of an appropriate signal from one or more sensors located in the vehicle, the processor activates at least one of the initiator assemblies, which in turn ignites at least one of the explosive transfer lines. The explosion propagates along the explosive transfer line to its corresponding restraint device or devices to activate one or more of them. Additionally, the explosive transfer lines feature a metalized layer that provides moisture resistance, and a way for verifying the continuity of the explosive transfer line.

Abstract: An occupant classification system is provided based upon the use of an array of electrical switches arranged between a seat trim and a reactive surface. The switches produce selective outputs signals as an engaging surface makes contact with one or more of the switches when an occupant occupies the seat. The output signals are interpreted into a control signal to distinguish between occupants for controlling an inflatable restraint system. The occupant classification system also includes a control structure which defines a distance between the array of switches and the engaging surface that is greater than zero when the seat is unoccupied so that the switches are insensitive to the initial forces applied to the seat through the seat trim. The distance between one or more of the switches and the engaging surface decreases to zero when the occupant occupies the seat to produce the selective output signals.

Abstract: Folding methods and patterns for folding an inflatable airbag for use in vehicles are disclosed. The folding patterns and methods of the invention assist in controlling the trajectory of the airbag cushion during deployment. More specifically, the methods and patterns of the invention may be used to deploy an overhead airbag cushion forward and downward along a windshield to place a portion of the airbag cushion rapidly in front of a vehicle occupant before the cushion has the opportunity to inflate significantly in a longitudinal direction to provide support and deceleration to a vehicle occupant. These methods result in airbag deployment which may prevent injury to out-of-position vehicle occupants.

Abstract: Ammonium nitrate is phase-stabilized (1) by a synergistic phase stabilization additive combination of at least cupric oxide and potassium nitrate. Specifically, phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate contains between about 94.0 and about 96.0 wt. % ammonium nitrate and between about 4 and 6 wt. % of a synergistic phase stabilization additive combination of at least cupric oxide and potassium nitrate, wherein the cupric oxide is present in a relative amount of no more than about 2.0 wt. %. In some cases, additional stability is imparted by the inclusion of zinc oxide such as in a relative amount of no more than about 1.5 wt. %.
