    摘要： Compounds of formula (I) are provided which may be used in a variety of devices including liquid crystal devices, piezoelectric devices, pyroelectric devices and in optical recording media, wherein X1 and X2 are independently selected from H, CN, COCH3, CO2CH3, m = at least 5; X3 and X4 are independently selected from formula (IA), wherein Y is selected from COO, OCO, O, S, CHOH, CHF, CH2; Q = (CH2)n wherein one or more non-adjacent methylenes may be replaced by O and n = 1-20; Z is selected from O, S, single covalent bond, COO, OCO; when Y is CH2 then n may also be 0; formula (A) represents any mesogenic group; X3 and X4 are also independently selected from H, OH, OCOR , COOH, CO2R , (CH2)pOH, (CH2)pCO2H, -(CH2)pOR or -(CH2)pCO2R and p = 1-20, R = H or C1-16alkyl, when R = C2-16alkyl the terminal CH3 group may be replaced by Br or Cl; provided that at least one of X3 and X4 is selected from formula (IA).

    摘要： Methods, based on the Wittig-Horner reaction, are provided for the synthesis of compounds of formula (I) wherein m is from 5-150, X and Y are independently selected from: CN, H, OH, COCH3, CO2H, CO2R1, where R1 is C1-12alkyl, NCS, SCN, CF3, CH2X where X is F, Cl, Br, OH, CHF2 and formula (IB), wherein J for each X and Y group is independently selected from: CH2, single covalent bond, OOC, CO2, O, CH2O, OCH2, CH2CO2, CH2OOC; p = 1-20; L for each X and Y group is independently selected from: O, CH2, OCO, CO2, S, NH; (a) is defined by formula (IC), wherein rings A, B and C are independently selected from phenyl, cyclohexyl, pyridine and pyrimidine and may be independently of each other substituted with at least one of Cl or F; linking groups A and B may be selected from single bond, CO2, OOC, CH2O, OCH2, CH2CH2, CC; Z is selected from CN, F, Cl, NO2, R, OR, CO2R, CF3, OOCR, NCS, SCN, where R = straight chain or branched chain alkyl and may include from 1-16 carbon atoms and including where one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be substituted by CH(CN), CH(CF3), CH(Cl), CH(CH3) in chiral or non-chiral form; provided that at least one of X and Y is selected from (IB); said method comprising the polymerisation of general formula (II), wherein X and Y are as defined for formula (I).

    摘要： The invention provides a poly(diallylamine) polymer derived from a monomer of formula (I) wherein R is a bridging group of valency r and r is an integer of 3 or greater, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative of such a polymer, for use in any surgical, therapeutic or diagnostic method, in particular for use as a bile acid remover and/or for use in reducing serum cholesterol levels. The invention also provides the use of such a polymer or derivative in the preparation of a medicament for use in any surgical, therapeutic or diagnostic method, in particular where the medicament is a bile acid remover or is for use in reducing serum cholesterol levels. The invention further provides a method of treatment of a human or animal patient to reduce levels of bile acid and/or serum cholesterol, by administering such a polymer; a pharmaceutical composition containing the polymer; and a method for producing the pharmaceutical composition.
