Abstract: Systems and methods for detection of a signal from droplets of an emulsion. An exemplary system may comprise a fluid transporter having a tube with an open end for aspirating droplets, a singulator to arrange the droplets in single file and to space the single-file droplets from one another, and a detection channel in optical communication with a detector configured to detect a signal from droplets. In some embodiments, the singulator may have a channel junction at which a stream of droplets in single file is combined with a stream of spacing fluid, and a tapered spacing channel extending downstream from the channel junction toward the detection channel. In some embodiments, the fluid transporter may suck droplet-containing fluid and spacing fluid through the detection channel from respective sources. In some embodiments, droplets may be subjected to a disaggregation routine before they are passed through the detection channel.

Abstract: A grain angle sensor system (40) for measuring grain angle direction of surface fibers of a wood object (26) with respect to at least one of a surface plane direction or a transverse direction, such as a dive angle, or with respect to both the surface plane and transverse direction. The system (40) includes multiple laser diodes (44) and photosensor detectors (52) integrated into an electro-optical assembly (54) that can sequence the firing of the lasers (44) to minimize crosstalk. An exemplary assembly (54) includes an enclosure housing an electronic control board connected to circuit cards containing multiple laser diodes (44) and multiple photosensor detectors (52).

Abstract: A "woodprint TM " characterization and identification technique unique employs cameras (16), lighting (14), camera interface hardware (18), a computer (20), and/or image processing software to collect and analyze surface characteristics of pieces of wood (8) to track them through an automated production process in real-time with information that is specific to each wood piece (8), such as what machining is required, its value, and/or its destination.
