Abstract:
A method of control of the supply of lubricating oil to a two stroke cycle internal combustion engine comprising supplying fuel to a fuel injector from a fuel reservoir having a fuel capacity greater than the maximum fuel requirement of the engine per cycle. The fuel in the reservoir being maintained at a substantially steady pressure. Delivering oil to the engine by a positive displacement pump having a delivery capacity per pump cycle greater than the maximum oil requirement of the engine per cycle. The oil pump being activated in response to the consumption of fuel from the fuel reservoir to maintain a substantially uniform predetermined ratio between the fuel consumption rate and the oil delivery rate.
Abstract:
A fluid metering pump (1) is disclosed which is operated by a source of pressurised fluid, which in the case of a pump for metering fuel, may be the crankcase (37) of a two-stroke, crankcase scavenged, internal combustion engine. The metered quantity of fluid displaced by the pump (1) is a function of the pressure of the pressurized fluid and time that the pressure acts on a pumping means (15) of the pump (1). Attenuation of the pressure may be achieved, especially under idle or high engine speed conditions, in the case of an engine, by a throttle (35) placed in a conduit (33) communicating an actuation chamber of the pump (1) with the source of pressurised fluid, such as the crankcase of a two-stroke engine.
Abstract:
A method of controlling operation of an internal combustion engine over part of the load or speed operational range of the engine by the use of fluid pressure available from a source associated with the operation of the engine to effect a managed control of at least one operating parameter of the engine such as engine speed or fuel delivery including fuelling rate and timing, or ignition timing. The fluid pressure is preferably derived from a source where the pressure varies in relation to variations in the engine speed and/or load or from a substantially steady pressure source, applied in a selective manner to effect the control. Preferably, the fluid pressure is derived from the gas in the crankcase of a two stroke cycle crankcase scavenged engine or from another source where the pressure of the gas is cyclic in a known waveform and provision is made to selectively apply the high and/or low portion of the pressure wave to control means to effect the control of the engine operation.
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine having a fuel injector (7) arranged for injecting fuel into a combustion chamber, the fuel injector (7) including a nozzle chamber (25) having a selectively openable nozzle (15) at one end to communicate the nozzle chamber (25) with the combustion chamber and including a fuel metering device (14) arranged to selectively deliver fuel to the nozzle chamber (25). There is also provided a gas chamber (10) adjacent the combustion chamber and in communication with the nozzle chamber (25). Preferably, the gas chamber (10) is located within the cylinder head (1) adjacent the nozzle chamber (25).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for metering liquid fuel for delivery to an engine including delivering during each cycle a predetermined quantity of liquid fuel into a control chamber (71) charged with compressed gas, and thereafter, adjusting the quantity of fuel in the control chamber (71) in accordance with the engine load and/or speed to the required quantity per cycle, and discharging the adjusted quantity of fuel from the control chamber (71) to an injection chamber (70) charged with compressed air for delivery to the engine combustion chamber. Conveniently, as the quantity of fuel is maintained in said control chamber (71) under pressure, the adjustment of the quantity of fuel is effected by opening a bleed valve (73) for a time period determined by the quantity of fuel required to be retained for delivery to the engine. A method and apparatus for metering fluids for cyclic delivery in variable discrete quantities are also disclosed.
