Disclosed is a positive electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which comprises a lithium-containing transition metal oxide having an oxygen cubic close-packed structure, wherein the lithium-containing transition metal oxide has a chemical composition represented by formula (1). Li[Lip(NixMnyCoz)1-p]O2 wherein x, y and z represent the ratio among the elements nickel, manganese and cobalt, respectively; and x, y, z and p fulfill the requirements represented by the following formulae: 0.2+y=x=0.7, 0.15=y, 0.05=z, x+y+z=1 and 0=p=0.1.
