The gaseous bubble has a cross-sectional area that corresponds with a cross-sectional area of the enclosure, such that the cross-sectional area of the gaseous bubble occupies substantially the entire cross-sectional area of the enclosure as it flows along the bundle.

A hydrophilic membrane that includes a hydrophobic polymer and a water-soluble polymer-metal comlex is provided. This membrane is made by heating a mixture of a hydrophobic polymer, a metal compounds, and a water-soluble polymer. The water-soluble polymer forms complexes with the metal compound and homogeneously entangles with the dissolved hydrophobic polymer to form a viscous dope. The dope is extruded through an annular orifice to form a hollow fiber. The fiber is put in an environment having a controlled humidity so that it becomes partially solidifed, and then, the fiber is put in a coagulation bath. The hollow fiber is formed by phase inversion in the coagulation bath and is collected using a take-up wheel that is partially immersed in a leaching bath.

A method for constructing a polyvinylidene fluoride based hollow fiber membrane from a polymer mixture using temperatures not greater than 80 DEG C, the mixture comprising polyvinylidene fluoride, a pore forming agent, and a solvent. The mixture can also comprise a second polymer selected from the group comprising polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinylformal, polyvinyl alcohol, polyhexafluoropropylene, polydiacetylene, cellulose and copolymers thereof. The hollow fiber membranes formed using the controlled temperatures of this invention have acceptable strength characteristics and asymmetrical pore structures which provide a low transmembrane pressure drop.

A hollow fiber microfiltration (MF) membrane is provided. The casting solution used to make this membrane includes a fiber-forming polymer having a degree of polymerization greater than about 1000, a water-soluble polymer, an anhydride with about 2 to 12 carbon atoms, and a solvent. The membrane is formed by mixing and heating these components to form a viscous dope (membrane casting solution in line 12) and then extruding the dope through an annular orifice of a spinneret (14) to form a hollow fiber MF membrane. THe hollow fiber membrane is then fed through a coagulation bath (20) and two leaching bath (22 & 52). The membrane is especially useful for filtering liquids, such as wine and juice, so as to remove bacteria, gel, and solid particles from the liquids.
