A method for the liquefaction of an industrial gas (26, 44) by integration of a methanol plant and an air separation unit (ASU) is provided. The method can include the steps of: (a) providing a pressurized natural gas stream (24, 27), a pressurized purge gas stream (47, 48) composed predominately of hydrogen and originating from a methanol plant, and a pressurized air gas stream (112) comprising an air gas from the ASU; (b) expanding three different pressurized gases to produce three cooled streams (32, 61/62, 122), wherein the three different pressurized gases consist of the pressurized natural gas stream, the pressurized purge gas stream, and the pressurized air gas stream; and (c) liquefying the industrial gas in a liquefaction unit against the three cooled streams to produce a liquefied industrial gas stream (46), wherein the industrial gas to be liquefied is selected from the group consisting of a first portion of the pressurized natural gas stream (26, 44), a nitrogen gas stream, hydrogen and combinations thereof.

A first gas present at low concentration in a source gas (1) is recovered from the source gas (comprising a fast first gas and a slow second gas) at a relatively high recovery using a particular scheme of three gas separation membrane stages. The non-permeate (R1) from the first stage (9) is a product gas comprising the slow gas. The second stage (13) feeds non-permeate (R2) to the third stage (7). The third stage (7) non-permeate (R3) is combined with the source gas (1) to give the gas (11) fed to the first stage (9). The permeate (P2) from the second stage (13) is divided into two portions. The second portion (P2B) is a product gas comprising the fast gas. The first portion (P2A) is combined with the permeates (P1, P3) from the first and third stages (9, 7) and the combination (15) is compressed and fed to the second stage (13). The invention is particularly applicable for separation of Helium from natural gas.

A method for liquefaction of natural gas using refrigeration from a combination of sources including a refrigeration cycle and letdown energy of natural gas is provided. The natural gas to be liquefied (LNG) is boosted in pressure using a booster (17) that is powered by expansion of a portion of the natural gas flow from the booster through a first natural gas turbine (15). A second flow of natural gas is expanded in a second natural gas turbine (25), and the resulting expanded stream, along with the natural gas expanded in the first natural gas turbine, are warmed against the natural gas to be liquefied. The flow rate of the natural gas in the second natural gas turbine is decoupled from the booster (17), thereby allowing for variation in flow rates and pressures while maintaining a constant production of LNG.

By operating the method in a dynamic fashion, additional liquid production can be realized in instances in which the pipeline pressure deviates from its highest value.

The set of permissives for each action may specify one or more parameters for controlling the execution of the corresponding action. After retrieving the startup information (620), the system may automatically initiate execution of the sequence of steps (630), and may monitor the execution of each of the steps (640). The system may determine (660), based on the monitoring, whether to modify a parameter specified by one of the permissives corresponding to an executed action.
