Abstract:
Non-halogenated monomers that can be polymerized into flame retardant polymers, and processes to produce the monomers and polymers is provided. In a simplest aspect, there is provided a monomer composition that can comprise a) a group derived from one of a (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylamide, or vinylbenzene, b) a polyphosphate moiety, and c) an amine species. In the monomer composition, the ethylenically unsaturated monomer of (a) is covalently bonded directly or through a linking group to the moiety of b), forming a precursor monomer unit. The amine species of c) is in complex with the precursor monomer unit. The polymer can be a homopolymer of the monomer composition, or a copolymer of the monomer composition having varying a), b) and c). In one embodiment, the polymer can additionally comprise ethylenically unsaturated monomers not covalently bonded to a polyphosphate moiety.

Thiocarbonate compounds which, in one embodiment, are utilized as a rheology modifier or associative thickener. The thiocarbonate compounds thicken or increase the viscosity of a composition, preferably an aqueous composition when used in an effective amount. In one preferred embodiment, the thiocarbonate compounds include at least one hydrophilic group containing repeat unit such as derived from acrylic acid, and at least one hydrophobic group to enhance association with other compounds and thus increase viscosity of a composition. Aqueous composition comprising a latex and thiocarbonate associative thickeners are described.

Thiocarbonate compounds which are curable and include at least one polymerizable functional group, preferably an unsaturated functional group. Curable compositions including the polymerizable group containing thiocarbonate compounds are disclosed. In one embodiment, the curable compositions comprise the cureable polymerizable group containing thiocarbonate compounds and a reactive diluent, or a photoinitiator, or a combination thereof, Methods for preparing the curable thiocarbonate compounds, compositions containing the thiocarbonate compounds, and cured compositions are also described. The curable thiocarbonate compounds are useful as coatings, adhesives, and sealants for various substrates such as wood, paper, plastic, metal, or the like.
