摘要: Coated capillary electrophoresis columns and methods for their use in electrophoretic separations are disclosed. The coated capillary columns include a length of tubing having an interior surface having an interconnected polymeric coating. The interconnected polymeric coating includes a hydrophobic hydrocarbon polymeric functionality covalently bound to the interior surface and polyvinylalcohol interconnected with the hydrophobic polymeric functionality. Exemplary columns are prepared by causing a Si-OH reactive compound, having a hydrophobic polymeric functionality, to react with Si-OH functionalities on the interior surface of capillary columns. Then causing vinyl acetate to polymerize in contact with the hydrophobic polymeric functionality and hydrolyzing the resulting polyvinylacetate forms a coating of interconnecting hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers. Alternative exemplary coatings include a modified polyvinylalcohol such as a polyvinylether.

摘要: A biosensor that is configured to be implanted into a living being includes a light source configured to generate source light with a source light spectrum. The biosensor also includes plasmonic nano-antenna optically coupled to the light source to receive the source light and to emit light therefrom exhibiting a spectral signature of the plasmonic nano¬ antenna. A bio-functionalized element joined to the plasmonic nano-antenna can receive a biomarker if available and effect a change in the spectral signature as a function of receipt or nonreceipt of the biomarker. A combination of the light source and nano-antenna can encode an optical communication signal into the emitted light and transmit the signal to a separate communication node. An optional detector can detect the emitted light and provide output indicative of receipt or nonreceipt of the biomarker, which can in turn be encoded into the communication signal for reporting to another node.

摘要: A multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar system comprises two or more software-defined millimeter-wave (SDMMW) nodes, a host processing system that is electrically coupled to the two or more SDMMW nodes, and a MIMO aperture array coupled to the two or more SDMMW nodes. The MIMO radar system is configured to form a MIMO TX channel and a MIMO RX channel for each of the two or more SDMMW nodes. The MIMO radar system includes a millimeter wave (MMW) frequency -modulated continuous wave (FMCW) oscillator source configured to generate a MMW FMCW signal. For each of the two or more SDMMW nodes, the radar system includes an upconverter assembly and a downconverter assembly.

摘要: A method and system to decode information stored on a polymer sequence, such as a DNA strand, is described herein. The method and system use molecular probes to label sections of the polymer sequence. Each molecular probe includes a fluorophore and a quencher. The fluorophore produces light with a color and wavelength corresponding to the information stored on the section of the polymer sequence the molecular probe labels. The quencher inhibits the production of light by an adjacent fluorophore. When adjacent sections of the polymer sequence are labeled with molecular probes, the fluorophore of the leading molecular probe produces light while the trailing molecular probe's light is quenched. The method and system then sequentially unbind the molecular probes from the sections of the polymer sequence within a waveguide, producing a sequence of observable fluorescence signals. The sequence can be used to determine the information stored on a polymer sequence.

摘要: Programmatic development of a software-defined wireless charging apparatus capable of charging multiple and different devices simultaneously is presented. Developer software is used to input specifications for the charging apparatus and generate configuration files that are used to configure operating software for the charging apparatus. The developer software can also design configurable hardware for fabrication of the charging apparatus, and can provide diagnostic data for use in optimizing the charging apparatus design. Wireless charging systems having novel capabilities are also provided.

摘要: A floatable interfacial solar-driven evaporation structure includes a water impervious thermal insulation layer adapted to float on a body of water, a porous absorber layer on the water impervious thermal insulation layer, and an interlocked non-woven cotton fiber layer having a portion thereof between the water impervious insulation layer and the porous absorber layer and one or more additional portions configured to extend to the body of water to act as a capillary-driven pump to transport water from the body of water to the porous absorber layer. An ultra-black photothermal paint covers the exposed upper surface of the porous absorber layer to convert solar radiation impinging on the ultra-black photothermal paint into heat for use in generating water vapor from water in the porous absorber layer.
