Abstract: A seal monitoring and control system for a gas lubricated non-contacting seal includes various sensors providing signals to a programmable logic control system. The control system is disposed to determine a presence of an anomalous operating condition of the seal, for example, based on phase, relative position of rotor to stator or other signals in combination provided by the various sensors to provide an output signal, which in one embodiment performs at least one mitigating process to correct the anomalous operating condition by adjusting at least one operating parameter of the seal.

Abstract: A system and method for monitoring a dry gas seal (22) positionable between a stationary housing (18) and a rotatable shaft (20). A plurality of sense elements (44) may rotate in response to the rotation of the rotatable shaft and a speed sensor (17) may sense the speed of the rotatable shaft (20) at speeds below one thousand rotations per minute based on sensing the plurality of sense elements (44). A processor (11) may receive output signals from the speed sensor (17) and may establish a position of the dry gas seal or an operating condition of the dry gas seal (22) based on the signal from the speed sensor (17).

A processor (11) may receive output signals from the speed sensor (17) and the acoustic emissions sensor (19), and may establish an operating condition of the dry gas seal based on the signal from the speed sensor when the first seal face and the second seal face reach the operational condition relative to one another.
