The invention relates to a method for producing a highly oriented, high molecular weight polymer tape. The method comprises: a) forming a non-fibrous polymeric sheet; (30) b) rolling and stretching said sheet (30) to form a partially oriented polymer web; (31) c) drawing the partially oriented polymer web (31) to form an oriented non-fibrous polymer tape (33), the method is discontinuous in that the ingoing line speed of at least one method step differs from the outgoing line speed of the preceding method step. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method. The invention further relates to a material sheet comprising the polymer tapes. A ballistic resistant article comprising the material sheet exhibits excellent antiballistic properties.

The invention relates to a preformed sheet comprising at least two mono-layers, each mono-layer containing unidirectionally oriented fibers having a tensile strength of at least about 1.2 GPa and a tensile modulus of at least 40 GPa, and a binder, with a fibre direction in each mono-layer being rotated with respect to the fibre direction in an adjacent mono-layer, and a separating film on both outer surfaces, characterized in that the separating film has a porosity of between 40 and 90 %. With this preformed sheet assemblies and articles offering a substantially higher ballistic protection level at a certain weight can be obtained. The invention further relates to an assembly of at least two such sheets and to a flexible ballistic-resistant article comprising said assembly.

The present application is concerned with a process for preparing polymers comprising vinyl acetate-, vinyl alcohol- and vinyl acetal-units by alcoholyzing and acetalyzing a polyvinyl acetate having a relatively low molecular weight in a solution in an organic solvent having a high polyvinyl acetate concentration in the presence of a strong acid catalyst at elevated temperatures, preferably 40 to 65°C, adding an alkaline agent after completion of the alcoholysis and acetalyzation to the desired degree to neutralize the acid catalyst, separating the salt formed on neutralization and recovering the produced polymer. This process is characterized by the fact that the separation of the formed salt is carried out by sedimentation. By this process it is possible to separate very easily the produced polymer from the salt nearly quantitatively.

The invention relates to a process to make films and tapes from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in the solid state. The films and tapes according to the invention have an improved thickness whereby the coefficient of variation of the thickness of the film of at most 6%.
