    Abstract: An electro-optical modulator for a photonic integrated circuit. The electro-optical modulator comprising: a substrate; a first waveguide on a first portion of the substrate; a first electrode; a second waveguide on a second portion of the substrate; and a second electrode. A first electrical impedance value between the first electrode and the second electrode is different from a second electrical impedance value between the first electrode and the second electrode. The first electrical impedance value along a first axis perpendicular a light propagation axis of the first waveguide. The second electrical impedance value along a second axis perpendicular the light propagation axis of the first waveguide. The first axis spaced from the second axis along the light propagation axis of the first waveguide.

    Abstract: A device (1) for providing controlled stirring comprising: an electromagnetic system (3) arranged for realising a magnetic field; and at least one stirring chamber (5) comprising at least one Suspended Magnetically Actuatable Pillar (7), SMAP (7), suspended in said chamber (5) from a support (9) and configured, in use, in said magnetic field such that said SMAP (7) is magnetically actuated, by said magnetic field, for providing said controlled stirring. A method using said device (1) for controlled stirring in a stirring chamber (5), said method comprising the steps of: realising, by said electromagnetic system (3), said magnetic field; and magnetically actuating, by said magnetic field, said SMAP (7), for realising said controlled stirring in said stirring chamber (5).     Abstract: Three-dimensional master equation modeling for disordered semiconductor devices is provided. Charge transport is modeled as incoherent hopping between localized molecular states, and recombination is modeled as a nearest-neighbor process where an electron at a first location and a hole at a second location can recombine at either the first location or the second location. Here the first and second locations are any pair of nearest neighbor locations. We have found that this nearest neighbor recombination model performs substantially better than the conventional local recombination model where an electron and a hole must be at the same location to recombine. The recombination rate is modeled as a product of a prefactor ϒ, hopping rates and state occupancies. Importantly, we have found that sufficient simulation accuracy can be obtained by taking ϒ to be given by an empirically derived analytic expression.

    Abstract: A fully integrated Òsample-in-signal-out Ó microfluidic paper-based analytical devices are provided relying on bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) switches for target analyte recognition and colorimetric signal generation. Simultaneous colorimetric detection and quantification of multiple antibodies in a single drop of whole blood is shown. The devices make use of BRET-based antibody sensing proteins integrated into vertically assembled layers of functionalized porous layer(s) of material. The device enables sample volume independent, eliminates addition of reagents to the sample, and has on-device blood plasma separation. User operation is a single drop of a sample and the acquisition of a photograph after sample introduction, with no requirement for precise pipetting, liquid handling or analytical equipment except for a camera. Using different antibodies as targets, simultaneous detection in whole blood was achieved. This device is believed to be ideally suited for user-friendly point-of-care-testing in low- resource environments based on BRET-sensors.

    Abstract: There is provided an apparatus comprising a control unit and a method of operating the apparatus to determine a health status of an infant. The method comprises acquiring contextual information associated with the infant (302) and acquiring at least one heart rate variability signal from the infant (304). The at least one heart rate variability signal acquired from the infant is processed to determine a heart rate variability feature (306) and the determined heart rate variability feature is assigned to a class according to the acquired contextual information (308). The determined heart rate variability feature is compared to one or more corresponding heart rate variability features stored in the same class as the determined heart rate variability in a memory (310) and a health status of the infant is determined based on the comparison (312).
