Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for the preparation of a surfactant, said method comprising reacting a furanic compound according to formula (V), or a salt thereof, with a malonate according to formula (VI), or a salt thereof, to obtain a first furan-based surfactant precursor of formula (I) or a salt thereof, (V) + (VI) (I) wherein R1 is H or CH2OX, wherein X is H or an aliphatic group; wherein R2, R3 and R4 are independently H or an aliphatic group; wherein the method further comprises one or more steps to convert the first furan-based surfactant precursor of formula (I), or a salt thereof, to a surfactant, which surfactant comprises - a furan-moiety comprising a backbone structure of formula (VII), (VII); - a hydrophilic moiety, preferably selected from the group consisting of sulfate, sulfonate, sulfinate, thiosulfate, sulfamidate, carboxylate, sarcosinate and taurate, phosphate, pyrophosphate, phosphonate, amines or ammonium, polyammonium, hydroxyammonium, pyridinium, picolinium, imidazolinium, benzimidazolinium, oxonium, sulfonium, phosphonium and non-ionic groups, and; - a hydrophobic moiety comprising an aliphatic chain comprising at least 6 carbon atoms.

Abstract: The present invention concerns an improved process for a process for the treatment of biomass, comprising (a) subjecting biomass to hydrothermal treatment in a hydrothermal reactor by immersing the biomass in a treatment liquid, wherein an effluent drained from step (b) or (c) is used as treatment liquid; (b) draining the liquid from the reactor via a liquid outlet to obtain a liquor and simultaneously or subsequently introducing another washing liquid into the reactor, wherein the washing liquid is pre-heated to a temperature 30 °C below operational temperature of step (a) or higher before being introduced into the reactor, (c) draining the reactor to obtain washed hydrothermally treated biomass and an effluent, wherein at least one of step (a) and (b) is performed at a temperature in the range of 100 - 250 °C. The invention further concerns a solid fuel and a liquor obtained by the process according to the invention, as well as a hydrothermal treatment facility to operate the process according to the invention.

Abstract: Process and modular system for producing formic acid from carbon dioxide. The process comprises (a) a carbon capture step wherein a source of carbon dioxide is contacted with an alkaline solution to obtain a solution comprising carbonate and/or bicarbonate; optionally (b) subjecting said solution to alkaline water electrolysis; (c) subjecting the solution comprising carbonate and/or bicarbonate to a hydrogenation step to obtain a solution comprising formate; and (d) subjecting the solution comprising formate obtained in step (c) to bipolar membrane electrodialysis and recycling the recovered alkaline solution obtained in step (d) back to step (a). The concentrated formic acid solution obtained from step (d) may be subjected to a hydrogenation step to obtain a concentrated formaldehyde solution.
