    Abstract: Structural tubing assemblies and methods of assembling them are disclosed. The structural tubing assembly (100) comprises a first tubular member (101) having a male connection portion (110) configured with one or more projections (112); a second tubular member (102) having a female connection portion (120) configured to receive the one or more projections of the male connection portion in an assembled configuration; and a fastening means (130) configured to releasably secure the male connection portion (110) to the female connection portion (120) in the assembled configuration. The fastening means (130) comprises an end-piece (131) configured to engage an end of the second tubular member, and a threaded fastener (132) configured to extend through an opening (137) in the end-piece and engage with at least one of the one or more projections of the male connection portion, and/or with the aid of an insert (133) with a threaded hole.

    Abstract: A computer implemented system and method for determining and analysing ocular refractive error of an eye. The method determines a set of sample biometric factors for a reference sample of eyes from a set of reference sample physical characteristics. Physical characteristics of a patient's eye are measured such that the type of measured patient physical characteristics include some or all of the reference sample characteristic types. Patient biometric factors are then calculated based on the measured and inherent patient physical characteristics and compared with the sample biometric factors to determine the effect of one or more parameters on the ocular refractive error of an eye. The method may calculate the difference between the refractive contribution of the axial length, cornea and internal optics in the patient's eye and the separate contribution from those factors in the sample physical characteristics.

    Abstract: A process for producing a synthetic tear drop suitable for forming a liquid contact lens film, comprising the steps of providing a drop of liquid comprising a lipid phase, an aqueous phase, and optionally a mucous phase, and a meniscus between the lipid phase and the aqueous phase, and treating the drop by electrowetting to change the shape of meniscus and provide a modified tear drop suitable for forming a liquid contact lens. Also disclosed is a synthetic tear drop having a lipid phase comprising oil, an aqueous phase comprising water, electrolytes, surfactant such as an amino acid and optionally metabolites, optionally a mucous phase containing mucins, and a meniscus between the lipid phase and the aqueous phase, wherein the shape of the aqueous phase has been modified by electrowetting. The modified tear drop is generally compositionally and volumetrically similar to a natural human basal tear.

    Abstract: We describe a method and a system for analysing a sample (12) using spectral polarimetry. The system comprises a light source, a first polarizer (22) having a first polarization angle for polarizing light from the light source, a second polarizer having a second polarization angle which is different to the first polarization angle, a birefringent component (20) which comprises a birefringent material, and a detector for receiving polarized light from the second polarizer (16). The birefringent component is positioned between the first and second polarizers and the sample is placed between the first polarizer and the second polarizer. The method comprises directing polarized light having a first polarization angle through a birefringent component which comprises a birefringent material, illuminating the sample with the light passing through the birefringent component, directing light through a polarizer having a second polarization angle which is different to the first polarization angle, and detecting the light transmitted through the polarizer.
