    Abstract: A method is disclosed of making a nano-structured carbon material by:- A)i)providing a porous carbon material having porosity; ii)impregnating a metallic material capable of catalyzing carbon nano structure growth within the porosity of the porous carbon material of step i) to provide an impregnated porous carbon material; or, B)providing an impregnated porous carbon material produced bysteps i) and ii); and, C)heating the impregnated porous carbon material to a temperature sufficient to promote carbon nano structure growth within the porosity of the carbon material to provide a nano-structured carbon material. The resulting material can be loaded with metal oxides.

    Abstract: A method of forming a ceramic material or body comprises the steps of:-i) providing a water-containing mixture of raw materials ii) forming said mixture into a shape iii) removing water from said shape iv) firing said shape at a temperature sufficient to effect sintering and/or reaction of the raw materials and thereby form a ceramic material or body in which the raw materials include a hygroscopic polymeric material capable of retaining water in the mixture over a range of temperatures above the boiling point of water.The hygroscopic polymeric material may be a so-called superabsorber, and the raw materials may comprise silicon carbide, graphite, sugar, and starch.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for side pumping lasers are disclosed. By pre-collimating radiation emitted by laser diode arrays (62, 66), the present invention provides transverse mode matching to achieve fundamental, or TEM00, mode operation in the corresponding (nominally vertical) axis. Optics associated with the resonant cavity (106, 114, 110, 118) additionally redirect energy longitudinally through the gain media, enhancing fundamental mode operation in the (nominally horizontal) other axis as well. With dual forty-watt linear arrays of laser diodes (62, 66) and four longitudinal passes, TEM00 mode outputs exceeding fifteen watts have been achieved. By de-tuning the pumping radiation from the absorption peak of the lasing material (14) improved matching of pumping energy to the lasing volume is achieved.
