Abstract: One form of sewer comprises a pipe having a bottom section (100) incorporating a flow channel (101) along which sewage flows. A cable guide (110) comprises a body section (111) and an arm section (112). The body comprises a panel (111) curved so as to be able to lie substantially flush with the walls of the flow (channel 101) and the arm comprises a tube with an internal passage. The arm (112) projects from the body (111) and the passage within the arm (112) extends from an opening (113) provided in the body (111) to an opening (114) provided at the distal end of the arm (112). The openings (113, 114) and the passage within the arm (112) are of suitable dimensions to carry a cable (105). The body is also provided with a cable clip (115).

Abstract: A cable guide (110) comprises an upper face (120) and a lower face (130). The lower face (130) has a generally convex form so as to lie in contact with the flow channel (101) when fitted in the flow channel (101). The upper face (120) has a generally concave form and is shaped to minimise disturbance of the flow when fitted in the flow channel (101). A passage is defined between the lower face (130) and the flow channel having an entrance opening (113) at a first end (111) of the cable guide (110) and exit openings (114) on the sides of the cable guide towards a second end (112). By utilising a cable guide (110), disruption to the flow within the channel (101) by the entrance or exit of the cable (105) is minimised. Additionally, the guide (110) restricts the lateral movement of the cable (105) prior to entering opening (113), preventing the cable (105) lying across the direction of flow. In this manner, the cable guide (110) helps to reduce the disruption to the flow caused by the entrance/exit of the cable (105).

Abstract: A cable guide (20) according to the present invention, comprises a substantially cylindrical pipe section (21) with a substantially outwardly projecting flange (22) at one end. A channel (25) is formed in the outside surface of the pipe section (21) and extends from a first point (23) at one end of the cable guide to a second point (24) at the other end of the pipe section (21) and further extends through the flange (22). The two opposite ends of the channel are located at different positions around the circumference of the pipe section (21). The channel (25) is sized and configured to provide a passage for accommodating a cable (not shown). The channel (25) forms a ridge (26) on the inside surface of the pipe section (21) which is shaped so as to minimise the disturbance to the flow of waste water through the cable guide and, therefore, to decrease the likelihood of blockages occurring.

Abstract: A building (1) is situated in the vicinity of a public roadway (2) along which is laid a trunk cable (4). An individual property water supply pipe (6) branches off the water main to enter the building (1). A water supply pipe (6) is provided at the time of construction of the building (1) and is an underground pipe. It is conventional to provide a dedicated (and usually underground) conduit for a branch cable. This can however be expensive and disruptive. In the present invention the branch cable is laid along water supply pipe (6). This allows the cable to cross between the trunk cable (4) and the building (1) with minimal disturbance of the ground therebetween. This is achieved by introducing cable to pipe (6) by use of a suitable Y-junction (10) at location (10a) and removing the cable from the pipe (6) by use of a second such Y-junction (10) at location (10b).

Abstract: A vehicle (10) is provided with a trench cutting apparatus (100) and is operable to cut a trench in a surface suitable for laying a cable in by applying the trench cutting apparatus (100) to the surface and moving forward. The vehicle (10) has a cab (11) in which an operator may sit and a rear portion (12). The trench cutting apparatus (100) is mounted on the front of the vehicle via a mounting structure (110) adapted to allow the trench cutting apparatus (100) to be moved relative to the vehicle (10). One element of motion is provided by the rotation of an upstanding limb (114) of the mounting structure (110) relative to a rotatable end mount (116). A second element of motion is provided by the rotation of an upstanding limb (112) of the mounting structure (110) within the bracket (111). The vehicle 10 is also provided with a suction device (not shown), the suction device operable to such up spoil or debris from the cutting process or otherwise through a suction opening (14). Spoil sucked up by the suction device is stored in tank provided in the rear portion (12) of the vehicle (10). This spoil may later be used to re-fill the trench or may be dumped at an authorised disposal site. The vehicle (10) can also be provided with one or more spray nozzles (not shown) operable to spray water onto the surface ahead of or during cutting. The water can help to damp down debris or spoil generated in the cutting process. The water may come from a tank provided in the rear portion (12) of the vehicle (10).

Abstract: In the present invention, a cable (105) is laid along sewer branch (101) to point B and then travels through a dedicated conduit directly to point C. As the cost of laying cable through a sewer can be cheaper and is usually less disruptive than laying cable in a dedicated conduit, the method of the present invention may reduce the cost of providing a cable link in situations such as A-C wherein a convenient sewer extends only part way between the cable end points.
