    Abstract: The invention relates to a hybrid solid-liquid electrolyte comprising a solid electrolyte and a liquid electrolyte, wherein the solid electrolyte contacts the liquid electrolyte to form a solid/liquid electrolyte interphase, and wherein the liquid electrolyte comprises: at least one organic solvent; at least one salt; and an additive, wherein the additive comprises water, and wherein the areal resistance at the solid/liquid electrolyte interphase of the hybrid solid-liquid electrolyte is reduced relative to the areal resistance at the solid/liquid electrolyte interphase of an equivalent hybrid solid-liquid electrolyte in which the liquid electrolyte does not comprise the additive.

    Abstract: An integrated reference electrode for use in an electrochemical measurement system, comprising: a reference electrode in combination with a hygroscopic hydrogel electrolyte impregnated and contained in a porous framework, wherein the hygroscopic hydrogel electrolyte is adapted to contact the reference electrode when in a hydrated state. Also, an ion selective membrane with an aromatic epoxy polymer made from one or more monomers having at least one epoxide group, and a chloride salt or a silver - silver chloride physically trapped in the aromatic epoxy polymer. On contact with water the aromatic epoxy polymer forms a network of channels for ion exchange. The membrane may be used between an electrolyte and an external fluid environment; or the membrane may be coated upon the surface of a reference electrode.

    Abstract: A method for fabricating an optical waveguide comprises: providing a sample of lithium niobate doped with magnesium oxide and having at least one grating of periodic domain inversion defined therein; applying a layer of metallic zinc to a surface of the sample over the at least one grating using sputter deposition; heating the sample in an atmosphere of pure oxygen to cause the zinc to indiffuse into the lithium niobate to form a waveguiding layer of increased refractive index under the surface of the sample; and using a dicing blade to cut two substantially parallel channels along a length direction of the at least one grating, to define a ridge waveguide between the two channels.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing cartilage from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), the method comprising providing chondrocytes by: 1) providing pluripotent stem cells (PSCs); 2) inducing differentiation of the PSCs into a primitive streak/mesendoderm by culturing the PSCs in hypoxic conditions, in a (mesendodermic) culture media comprising: i) a Wingless/Integrated (WNT) family member, ii) an Activin family member, and iii) a Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) family member; 3) inducing differentiation of the primitive streak/mesendoderm into a mesoderm by culturing the primitive streak/mesendoderm in hypoxic conditions, in a (mesodermic) culture media comprising: i) a FGF family member, ii) a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family member, iii) Follistatin, and iv) a Neurotrophin (NT); and 4) inducing differentiation of the mesoderm into chondrocytes by culturing the mesoderm in hypoxic conditions, in a (chondroinductive) culture media comprising: i) a FGF family member, ii) a BMP family member, iii) a Neurotrophin, and iv) a Growth/Differentiation Factor (GDF) family member; and forming a pellet of the chondrocytes and culturing the pellet of the chondrocytes in a culture media under hypoxic conditions to produce the cartilage. The invention further relates to methods of chondrocyte production, synthetically produced cartilage, and use in therapy.
