摘要: A pharmaceutical composition includes a small molecule and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. The small molecule interacts with a deoxyxylulose phosphate reductoisomerase (Dxr). A method for treating or preventing a microbial infection in a subject in need thereof includes administering the pharmaceutical composition. A method for inhibiting the growth of a eukaryotic pathogen includes contacting the eukaryotic pathogen with an effective amount of the pharmaceutical composition.

摘要: The present technology detects immune cell activation. In certain embodiments, the system has a polymer block with a reaction chamber having an optically clear light path and fluidic connections to a device having a microcontroller in communication with electromagnets, air pumps, valves, an LED light source, and a photosensor. The polymer block is able to receive a blood sample in media comprising antibody coated beads. With the block placed in the device, the electromagnets facilitate magnetic capture of a complex between specific cells in the blood sample and the antibody coated beads. The pump and valves are coordinated with the electromagnet such that the captured cells can be retained in the block while unwanted cells and proteins are washed away. After capture of the cells, the cells are lysed in the presence of a cleavable substrate. The LED transmits light through the reaction chamber in the polymer block, and the photosensor detects light transmittance through the fluid containing the lysed cells and the cleavable substrate. The cleavage of an elastase substrate by the lysed cells generates a reaction product that absorbs light of specific wavelengths, and thus the decrease in light transmittance over time is indicative of elevated elastase activity and immune cell activation in the blood sample.
